HIGHLANDERS TAKE DOWN VIRGINIA IN CHARLOTTESVILLE, 57-44

Charlottesville, VA - - -The Radford women's basketball team picked up a giant win for the program as they knocked off the Virginia Cavaliers, 57-44, on Saturday afternoon at John Paul Jones Arena. It was the Highlanders first victory against UVA since 1979 as the Cavaliers had won seven straight in the series. It was Radford's first win against an Atlantic Coast Conference member since they defeated Wake Forest during the 2016-2017 season.

"This was a great win for our program and I'm extremely proud of our team," said Highlander head coach Mike McGuire. "We had great preparation for this game and we came in believing that we could win. I think the team was disappointed in how we finished up at Virginia Tech the other night. We were able to regroup and refocus and came in determined to win this game."

Senior forward Destinee Walker paced three Highlanders in double-figures with a game-high 18 points on 8-of-18 shooting. Redshirt junior forward Lydia Rivers grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds and added nine points (4-of-6 fga). Redshirt junior Savannah Felgemacher recorded her third double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Radford (4-3) held the Cavaliers to 24.6 percent shooting (14-of-57), including just 1-for-13 (7.7 percent) from behind the arc. The Highlanders went 24-of-59 (40.7 percent) from the floor.

The Highlanders took a 14-12 edge after the opening quarter as they held the hosts to just 3-of-13 shooting. Walker and Rivers combined to go 4-for-5 from the floor to get Radford off to a good start.

Radford took control of the contest with a spectacular second quarter as they outscored Virginia by a 21-4 margin. The Highlanders scored eight consecutive points as they widened their lead to 24-14 with 5:44 remaining in the stanza. Felgemacher scored four points during the spurt and Walker and junior guard Khiana Johnson also added field goals.

Virginia stopped the bleeding momentarily as Lisa Jablonowski converted a layup with 5:31 left, however, the Highlanders scored the final 11 points of the half to take a 35-16 lead.

Walker scored five points during the stretch and Johnson hit a dagger 3-pointer to beat the halftime buzzer. Johnson, who scored her 600thcareer point in the first quarter, calmly dribbled up the court and drained the triple with the Cavs' defense on their heels.

Radford took their largest lead of the game at 42-20 after Walker converted a layup with 5:18 remaining in the third quarter.

The Highlanders still led 45-24 with 2:58 left in the quarter after Felgemacher's fast-break layup but Virginia climbed back into the contest by scoring the final 11 points to close within 45-35 heading into the fourth quarter.

Johnson gave her team a huge confidence boost as she stuck a big 3-pointer to open the fourth quarter, providing Radford with a 48-35 advantage.

Virginia was able to get within single-figures at 52-43 after Brianna Tinsley made a trifecta with 3:35 left but that was as close as they would get.

Redshirt junior guard Jen Falconer picked a great time to make her first 3-pointer of the season as she swished a right-corner attempt with 3:13 left to quiet the crowd on the next possession. Rivers followed that up with a layup to widen the lead to 14 points.

The Highlanders trailed for only 50 seconds in the contest.

Radford will host Morehead State next Saturday afternoon.
