FRESNO STATE PULLS AWAY LATE TO DEFEAT THE HIGHLANDERS

GAME INFORMATION
  • Score: Fresno State 17, Radford 8
  • Records: Radford (3-6) | Fresno State (8-4)
  • Location: Cupp Stadium | Radford, Va.

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford women's lacrosse team hung tough for the first 45 minutes of play, but couldn't keep Fresno State at bay for the final 15 minutes and ultimately fell, 8-17, at Cupp Stadium on Thursday night.

Down by just one goal, 5-6, at halftime, the Highlanders continued to go back-and-forth with the Bulldogs who began to find their rhythm in the second period. A goal from junior attacker Adrian Rius cut Fresno State's lead to 10-8 with 15:26 to go in regulation, but that was when the visitors took over.

Seven straight goals from five different goal scorers put the game out of reach, moving Radford to 3-6 on the year. The Bulldogs improve to 8-4 after winning four of their last five games.

Fresno State got the game rolling with a goal less than two minutes off the clock, but junior midfielder Juliette Ruland answered with a laser from the left wing to tie things back up at one apiece.

The Bulldogs then made their first run of the contest, finding the back of the net twice in a row to go up, 3-1, at the 21:30 mark. The Highlanders showed plenty of fight however, scoring three straight to pull ahead, 4-3.

Two of the next three goals went the way of the Bulldogs before both defenses buckled down and kept the game scoreless for the final 8:26 of the first half to keep the score at 6-5 heading into halftime.

Freshman attacker Jennifer Shield came off the bench to have the best game of her young career, setting season-highs for shots (5), shots on goal (4), goals (2) and ground balls (2) while tying her season high of one assist.

Rius was dominant on draw controls, breaking her own single-game program record with 10 on the day. She helped the Highlanders earn a 9-1 advantage in draw controls in the first half alone and a 16-11 advantage by the end of the game. Her previous-best was nine on three separate occasions.

Doing everything she could to keep Radford in the game, sophomore goalie Jenny Davis had another strong game with 13 saves.
