HIGHLANDERS HEAD EAST FOR DOUBLEHEADER WITH NORFOLK STATE



RADFORD, Va. – The Radford softball team will head towards the east coast for a midweek doubleheader with Norfolk State on Wednesday beginning at 3 p.m., with the second game scheduled to start at 5 p.m., at NSU Softball Field.

HIGHLANDER HIGHLIGHTS
  • Radford (22-15) went 2-2 last week with wins over Virginia Tech and Liberty in its first two games at Radford Softball Stadium. The Flames bounced back and took the final two games of the series.
  • Marissa Gagliano, who had a 36 game reached base streak prior to the end of the Liberty series, leads the team with a .373 batting average.
  • The Riviera Beach, Fla., native has a team high 44 hits with nine doubles and a 1.017 on base plus slugging percentage.
  • Senior Maggie Rowe has tallied 10 RBIs over the last 11 games. She leads the team with 28 runs driven in.
  • 18 of her 28 RBIs have come with two outs. She has tallied 41 career two out RBIs.
  • Kayla Huffman (7-4) has 34 strikeouts over the last eight games. She and Abby Morrow (14-9) are tied for the team lead in strikeouts this season with 73.
  • Huffman has a 2.12 ERA with 79.1 innings pitched and only 16 walks.
  • Morrow ranks fourth in the nation averaging 0.77 walks per seven innings pitched, while the team ranks 17th with a 3.65:1 strikeout-to-walk ratio.
  • Talia Douglas is second on the team with a .339 batting average and 23 RBIs. However, those numbers lead all freshmen on the team.
  • Radford has now jumped into the top 100 RPI, moving up 15 spots and now sits at 86.
 
SCOUTING NORFOLK STATE
  • Norfolk State has already surpassed their win total from 2017 with an 18-23 mark. The Spartans only won 12 games last season.
  • NSU has one win and three losses against the Big South this year. The Spartans defeated Charleston Southern, 4-3, in eight innings, but also lost to the Bucs in the same weekend. The other two losses came against Winthrop.
  • The Spartans are coming off a sweep over Howard in Washington D.C., where they outscored the Bison by a combined 30-6.
  • North Carolina Central will take on Norfolk State in a doubleheader on Tuesday night at NSU Softball Field.
  • Kylee Lopez leads the Spartans in almost every offensive category and leads the MEAC with 15 doubles. She is second in the conference in home runs with 11 and RBIs with 39.
  • Hunter Halford (5-9) enters with a 2.97 ERA and 61 strikeouts through 89.2 innings pitched
  • Halford has only allowed 13 walks, but opponents are hitting .246 when facing her.
