RADFORD, Va. – The Radford women's lacrosse team looked to be lining up a huge Big South upset at Cupp Stadium on Saturday, but a second half run by Winthrop resulted in a 9-12 defeat.

With just over 20 minutes to play in regulation, junior attacker Adrian Rius and freshman attacker Jennifer Shield scored back-to-back goals to put Radford up, 8-5. The Eagles took over from there however, finding the back of the net seven straight times between the 19:07 and 3:39 marks to turn their three-goal deficit into a four-goal, 12-8, lead.

Shield scored one more time with 2:29 left on the clock to pull the Highlanders within three at 9-12, but that was where the score would stay.

With the loss, Radford drops to 4-8 overall and 1-2 in the Big South while Winthrop improves to 10-3 overall including a 3-0 record in conference play.

Radford began the game exactly like it did in the win over Longwood – dominating possession and dictating the pace of play to secure a 3-0 lead early. Sophomore attacker Lindsey Carroll was responsible for the first goal less than a minute into the match and Shield netted two free position goals across the next few minutes.

The Highlanders and Eagles exchanged goals from that point on in the first half, giving Radford a 6-5 advantage heading into the locker room for halftime.

Winthrop goalie Alaina Girani was huge for the Eagles, making 12 saves and posting a .571 save percentage.

Shield easily had the best game of her young career, leading all players with four goals on only four shot attempts. She added two ground balls for good measure.

Katherine Judge also had four goals on the visitor's side while Nicole Beatson, the nation's leading scorer heading into Saturday, contributed three.

Sophomore defender Shea Swingle led a stingy Radford defense with five ground balls and five caused turnovers.
