WOMEN’S SOCCER PUSHES PAST MOUNT ST. MARY’S, 2-1

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford women's soccer team survived a wild second half and pushed past Mount St. Mary's with a 2-1 victory on Sunday afternoon at Cupp Stadium.

Just five minutes into the second half a long horn blew that signaled lightning was within eight miles of the stadium that meant the players, coaches and spectators had to evacuate. After a lengthy lightning delay that lasted about an hour, the players were back on the field.

Radford (2-1-1) already had a 1-0 lead over Mount St. Mary's (1-4) thanks to Reese Degnan's first career goal in the 40th minute. Once the players were back on the field, both teams were blasting shots left and right.

Nelia Perez extended the lead to 2-0 as Jessica Wollmann, who was in the middle of the field, headed the ball to her. Perez made a quick move past the defender and it was all over from there. After just crossing into the 18-yard box she fired the ball just went right past the keeper in the 53rd minute – just three minutes after the weather delay.

Courtenay Kaplan tallied four saves in the match, but the most important one came in the 72nd minute as Carter Merrigan took a shot that had Kaplan diving towards the left post, knocking it away. Just one minute later a free kick was given to the Mountaineers just outside of the penalty box. Kayla Hughes placed it in the upper 90 and cut the lead to one in the 73rd minute.

The Mountaineers rattled off a few more of their seven second half shots in the final 17 minutes, but the Highlanders played great defense and kept them from scoring to preserve the 2-1 victory.

MOMENT THAT MATTERED
Wollmann found Perez racing down the middle of the field towards the goal and the junior made a juke move past the defender for the one-on-one with the keeper. It was no match for Maggie Barron, the Mount goalkeeper, as she scored the eventual game-winning goal. It was her first goal and game-winning goal of the season, and only the second game-winning goal of her career.

STAT OF THE MATCH
Ana Revollo assisted on the first goal of the match when she played a deep ball to Degnan, who finished for the score. It was the second career assist for Revollo and the first since 2015, when she had a multi-assist performance against Gardner-Webb as a freshman.

TEAM LEADERS
Perez and Wollmann combined for nine of Radford's 16 shots as Perez had five and Wollmann added four. Wollmann, Perez, Degnan and Gabi Paupst had the four shots that landed on target. Kaplan faced 10 shots, accumulated four saves and picked up her second win of the season in goal. Herself along with Lily McLane, Jane Everett and Kayla Thomas played a full 90 minutes.

QUOTABLE
"Consistency is the word," Ben Sohrabi said about the performance. "We've got to be more consistent. At times we've put together some good sequences where we defend well and other times I thought we made some inconsistent errors. I think if we can clean things up and be more consistent for a full 90 minutes then I think we'll have success. Give credit to Mount St. Mary's because they have some great players. They kept the pressure on us, but we've just got to be more consistent."

UP NEXT
The Highlanders have back-to-back road matches for the first time this season. The first is against Appalachian State on Saturday at 7 p.m., in Boone, N.C.
