WOMEN’S SOCCER FALLS TO GARDNER-WEBB

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – A pair of goals by Maddie Turlington were too much to overcome as the Radford women's soccer team fell to Gardner-Webb, 2-1, on Saturday night in Boiling Springs, N.C.

Play started a little slow in the first half, but in the 24th minute Turlington put Gardner-Webb on the board when she headed the ball that found the back of the net for the score. Only five minutes had gone by until Turlington made it a 2-0 game. She took a shot from 20 yards out that went through Courtenay Kaplan's legs and into the goal. Turlington only had one goal on the season before the match.

Despite the loss, Kayla Thomas scored her first collegiate goal. It came in the second half as Radford played a more offensive approach to try and diminish the lead. The 76th minute goal cut the Runnin' Bulldog lead to one and gave the Highlanders some momentum. Jordan Lundin put a good ball into play on a corner kick that Thomas jumped up and headed past Keely Brown.

About eight minutes later, the Highlander thought they scored the game-tying goal. Jasmine Casarez took a shot right inside the penalty box after leaving all the defenders in the dust. As soon as the shot went in the goal a whistle blew and the offside flag was raised. The goal did not count and that was the Highlanders last good look at tying the match.

MOMENT THAT MATTERED
A stretch of five minutes was the demise of Radford in Saturday's match. Turlington scored the go-ahead goal in the 24th minute and picked up a multi-goal game with a score in the 29th minute.

STAT OF THE MATCH
Radford took 19 shots compared to Gardner-Webb's 12. The Highlanders had 11 shots on goal, while GWU had eight. Casarez led with four shots, while Thomas, Nelia Perez and Jessica Wollmann had three.

TWEET OF THE MATCH

QUOTABLE
"I was very disappointed with how we played in the first half," Ben Sohrabi said. "In the second half we picked up the intensity and were very good, but we have to play 90 minutes each time out."
