EARLY GOALS LIFT RADFORD PAST LONGWOOD, 2-1



RADFORD, Va. – Two first half goals created an early lead that was too much for Longwood as the Radford women's soccer team picked up a 2-1 victory on Wednesday night at Cupp Stadium.
 
Nelia Perez put the Highlanders on the scoreboard in the seventh minute as Jasmine Casarez played the ball in behind the defense on the right side of the field. Perez took a touch and fired the ball past the keeper for the early 1-0 lead.
 
The Highlanders kept the pressure up and added to their lead as Jordan Lundin placed a free kick into the box. The ball found its way through the traffic and to the feet of Jessica Wollmann. She was in great position and there was nothing Madison Van Dyke, the Lancer goalkeeper, could do. The Wollmann goal in the 22nd minute gave Radford a 2-0 cushion.
 
Wollmann's goal would eventually be the game-winning goal and the 10th of her career, which ties her for the lead in career game-winning goals at Radford.
 
Longwood came out firing in the second half and took 13 shots. One of them found the back of the net in the 82nd minute when Kennedy Culbreath converted a rebound shot off her own miss. The goal cut the deficit to one.
 
The Lancers fired four more shots in the final eight minutes, but Courtenay Kaplan and the Highlander defense kept the lead intact en route to the win.
 
MOMENT THAT MATTERED
The Highlanders scored two goals within the first 25 minutes. The final Radford goal would pay dividends and eventually become the game-winning goal.
 
STAT OF THE MATCH
Kaplan recorded a season-high eight saves, while facing 20 shots. The eight saves was just one shy from tying a career-high.

    QUOTABLE
"I thought we played great for 65 minutes tonight and scored two great goals," Ben Sohrabi said. "Nelia had a great finish in the first goal. In the second half I think we need to have a little more depth and some more composure. However, we're still happy with three points."
 
UP NEXT
Radford will remain at home and welcome High Point to Cupp Stadium on Saturday night at 7 p.m.
