RADFORD TOPS HIGH POINT IN OVERTIME THRILLER



RADFORD, Va. – Lily McLane hit the golden goal with 12 seconds on the clock in the first overtime period that lifted Radford to a 3-2 thrilling victory over High Point on Saturday night at Cupp Stadium.
 
McLane blasted a shot from 35 yards away in the winding seconds of the first overtime period. The shot, with some steam behind it, hit the hands of Talia Klimes but slipped through and found the back of the net. The celebration began and the Radford bench stormed the field.
 
Jessica Wollmann gave Radford a 1-0 lead just three minutes into the match, foreshadowing what would be a crazy contest. Nelia Perez found the streaking Wollmann in the middle of the field for the score. Both teams were pretty quiet for the remaining 42 minutes of the half.
 
High Points scored in the first minute of the second half as Brooke Parsons scored from just inside the 18 yard box after creating some open space and tied it at one. In the 49th minute – three minutes later – High Point took the lead. Parsons played the ball to Skyler Prillaman in the middle of the box. Prillaman one-timed the ball and belted a strike for a score. The goal gave the Panthers a 2-1 lead.
 
The Highlanders wouldn't go down without a fight as they fired 16 second half shots. One of the most important shots came in the 71st minute after Perez was fouled by Klimes, the Panther goalkeeper, that created a penalty kick. Jordan Lundin would take the shot and stunned the keeper thus tying the match at two.
 
Neither team found the back of the net in the remaining minutes forcing the overtime period.
 
MOMENT THAT MATTERED
Three minutes into the first overtime period, Prillaman had a breakaway after beating three Radford defenders. She dribbled just inside the penalty box and fired a shot to the left side of the goal. Courtenay Kaplan, in a diving effort, knocked the ball out of bounds and stopped High Point from converting the golden goal.
 
STAT OF THE MATCH
Radford took 31 shots in the match with 22 coming after the first half. The defense held High Point to just 13 with six landing on goal. The 31 shots is a season-high and the most shots taken by the Highlanders since 2015, when they took 49 against Southern Virginia. It's the most shots taken against a conference opponent since 2014.
 
STAT LEADERS
Jasmine Casarez led with eight shots, while Perez followed with seven and Wollman with six. Lundin also added five and had two on goal.

"I thought it was a back-and-forth game," Ben Sohrabi said. "I was pleased with how we came out and scored an early goal. They stormed back in the second half, and that's what I expect from High Point. We kept creating chance, after chance, after chance. Overtime is about heart and our girls showed a lot of heart and scored a goal."
 
UP NEXT
Radford will return to action next Saturday at Winthrop, who is tied for first place in the Big South with the Highlanders. The match is slated to begin at 1 p.m.
