FOUR GOALS PROPEL RADFORD PAST PIRATES IN COMMONWEALTH CLASH

RADFORD, Va. – Two goals in each half created a lead that Hampton couldn't overcome in the Radford women's soccer team's 4-0 victory over the Pirates on Wednesday night at Cupp Stadium.

Radford fired seven shots in the first 15 minutes until the eighth one fell by Gabi Paupst. Brianna Oliver played a beautiful through ball to Nelia Perez racing down the center of the field. Perez took a couple of dribbles and fired a shot that bounced off the Hampton keeper. The saved shot bounced right to Radford's leading goal scorer, Gabi Paupst. The junior had a wide-open net and scored her eighth goal of the season giving Radford an early, 1-0, edge.

Perez, who has the second-most goals of any Highlander, joined the scoring party in the 29th minute. Oliver found her on another through ball, this time playing it over the defense. Perez used her lighting quick speed to blow past the Pirate defenders and get to the ball. She took two touches and fired the shot from 16-yards out and found the back of the net. That gave Radford a 2-0 lead going into halftime.

The senior wasn't done scoring. Just eight minutes into the second half the Highlanders played great team soccer. Paupst found true freshman Alexeis Kirnos for the classic give-and-go play. Kirnos passed it back to Paupst in the middle of the field, who had the keeper and one defender closing in. Out of the corner of her eye, the junior found Perez to her left all alone with an open net. The senior from Newport News, Va., scored the easiest goal of her career and put the Highlanders ahead, 3-0. The goal also put Perez tied for the team lead in goals scored this season with Paupst, as the duo have eight each.

As time winded down the Highlanders started to use more of the bench and had 23 players see action on the pitch. One of the reserves was junior midfielder Kateri Schoettinger, who had only played 69 minutes all season prior to Wednesday night's match. She logged 14 against the Pirates and took her first and only shot all season.

It came on a free kick as time winded down to under 5 seconds left in regulation. She fired a shot from 30-plus yards out and nailed the upper 90 on the right side of the goal with just one tick on the clock remaining. It was her first career shot and goal.

Time expired right after the kickoff sealing the victory for Radford. The team took 20 shots but only landed seven on frame. The Pirates took nine shots and also landed seven on frame. Courtenay Kaplan recorded all seven saves for Radford and picked up her fifth solo shutout of the season. Paupst tallied three points – one goal and one assist, while Kirnos and Oliver also tallied one point with an assist each. Schoettinger racked up two points with her first career goal and Perez led with five shots.

STAT OF THE MATCH
Perez totaled a career-high five points in the win over Hampton. She tallied four points, a previous career-best in a single match, once as a sophomore and once this season against USC Upstate. In 2016, Perez had five points all season as a freshman, but reached that amount in one match during her second-to-last regular season contest inside Cupp Stadium.
