RADFORD DROPS MIDWEEK MATCH TO LONGWOOD
10/2/2019 10:13:00 PM | Women's Soccer
FARMVILLE, Va. – The Radford women's soccer team dropped its midweek match to Longwood, 1-0, on Wednesday night at the Longwood Athletics Complex in Farmville, Va.
Both teams controlled possession evenly throughout the first 30 minutes of the match until Longwood found the back of the net for the lone score of the game. Tori Gagliardi took a shot in the box in the 33rd minute. She chipped it over Courtenay Kaplan's head, who was in good position. The ball grazed the crossbar and landed in the back of the net, which gave the Lancers a 1-0 lead.
The Highlanders knew they needed a score to tie the match and turned up the offensive intensity, especially in the second half. Radford was outshot 8-5 in the first half but outshot the Lancers, 18-15 at the conclusion of the match. 13 of the Highlanders 18 shots came in the second half.
Radford had a couple of different scoring chances late but couldn't get a goal. One came in the 89th minute when the Highlanders took a corner kick from the right side. Saleena Lynch got a head on it but the ball went wide right of the net. Longwood cleared the ball out of the box and the final horn sounded, ending the match.
Alexeis Kirnos and Lily McLane took four shots apiece, while Gabi Paupst and Mia Wood took two. McLane led with two shots on goal and defensively, Kaplan tallied seven saves in a full 90-minute match in goal.
QUOTABLE
"Lots of credit to Longwood and their coaching staff," Ben Sohrabi said. "They needed conference points, were well organized and their team played hard. That being said I thought we played well too especially the second half. Our team needs to be resilient and be ready for 90 minutes Saturday."
UP NEXT
Radford will return to the NRV for a 7 p.m., match with UNC Asheville on Saturday. It will be Senior Night at Cupp Stadium as the Highlanders will honor their seniors prior the match.
