RADFORD, Va.—After opening the 2019-20 season at Vanderbilt, Radford will look to have a bounce back game against South Carolina State in Orangeburg, S.C. on Tuesday, November 12th at 7:00 p.m.
Even in the loss to the Commodores, there were bright spots for the Highlanders. Returners,
Khiana Johnson and
Amele Ngwafang had standout performances in the Historic Memorial Gymnasium. K. Johnson paced Radford's offense with a total of 18 points going 7-for-14 from the floor and three-for-five behind the arc. The sophomore, Ngwafang posted a career night in Music City with a near double-double at nine points and 12 boards.
Head Coach
Mike McGuire and his staff emptied the bench in the season opener, playing all 12 players in the contest. Several of them making their debuts in a Radford uniform.
To begin the month of November, the Highlanders were a household name. Radford was mentioned as receiving votes (29) in the College Insider Mid-Major Poll. The NCAA also released an article that predicted that the Highlanders would lock the 15th seed and take on UConn in the First Round of the 2020 NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Tournament.
Against South Carolina State, the All-Time series is deadlocked at 1-1. The last meeting between these two teams came last season in the Dedmon Center, where the Highlanders downed the Bulldogs 61-37.
A Radford win would swing the All-Time series in favor of the Highlanders at 2-1. A victory would also keep an 0-2 start at bay for Radford, which the program hasn't seen since the 2009-10 season.
The senior trio is on the watch list to break several individual career records.
Jen Falconer is 16 games away from tying
Jayda Worthy (2014-18) for career games played at 123. K. Johnson is 73 points away from joining the 1,000-point club. Falconer & Johnson are also two and three in career three-point attempts at 331 and 298. Falconer is ninth in career assists at 260.
Sydney Nunley has now solidified herself at No.7 in individual career blocks at 94.
Head Coach Audra Smith is now in her second season at the helm with an overall record of 17-17. The Bulldogs are now 1-1 after playing Big South Conference foes, Presbyterian and Charleston Southern. They lost to the Blue Hose 70-49, but bounced back against the Buccaneers 81-75.
