RADFORD WINS BIG AGAINST BRIDGEWATER COLLEGE IN HOME OPENER

RADFORD, Va. – The last time Radford won by 50 points or more was on Dec. 27, 2015. That all changed on Tuesday night as the Highlanders defeated Bridgewater College 91-40 inside the Dedmon Center.

Radford closed out the first half on a 25-8 run and took a commanding 41-24 lead into the locker room. That was moments after Bridgewater's Jalil Langston hit a 3-pointer to tie the game at 16. The Highlanders shot 63 percent as a team, going 10-for-16 from the floor during the run. The defense created a lot of scoring chances in that amount of time, forcing five turnovers. The Highlanders had seven different scorers during the stretch, led by Carlik Jones, who scored 10 and gave Radford the final lead of the game.

The run didn't stop for the Highlanders, who came out of the locker room on fire. Travis Fields, Jr., hit a 3-pointer a minute into the half. Then Jones added five points of his own before Donald Hicks topped off the 11-0 run with a 3-pointer. The early second half outing gave the Highlanders a 51-24 lead.

Radford kept its foot on the gas pedal, scoring 50 points in the second half, shooting 56.3 percent from the field and 50 (8-of-16) from beyond the arc. Devin Hutchinson led the team with 12 points in the final 20 minutes knocking down three treys. The Highlander defense stepped up in the second half and held the Eagles to only 16 points and 16 percent shooting. BC only made four baskets in the final half of play, with two of them from Chandler Murray, who led the team with 17 points.

Devine Eke claimed Radford's first double-double of the 2019-20 season with 10 points and 10 rebounds in 19 minutes of play. He also added two assists and one block to his stat line. It was the graduate transfer's first double-double since Jan. 27, 2016, when he scored 13 points and corralled 11 boards for Maine.

Jones was on triple-double alert midway through the game with 10 points, five assists and four steals. He finished with 20 points, seven assists and five steals. The redshirt junior shot 72.7 percent on Tuesday, going 8-for-11, and is currently shooting 68 percent for the season.

Hutchinson and Fields Jr., also had double-digit scoring nights as Hutchinson poured in 17 and Fields Jr., added 10.

STAT OF THE MATCH
All 12 players that saw action on Tuesday found their way into the point column on the stat sheet, including four double-figure scorers led by Jones' 20 points. Six Highlanders scored their first points of the 2019-20 season and Radford native Miles Jones scored his first collegiate basket.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Radford forced 22 turnovers in the game. The last time the Highlanders forced 20 or more turnovers came in the 2017-18 season, when Radford tallied 20 against Winthrop on Feb. 3, 2018. The Highlanders also outscored the Eagles 50-16 in the second half. Radford notched a 50-point second half last season in the Big South Quarterfinal victory over Presbyterian. Radford was one rebound shy of 50 and one assist shy of 20, leading the Eagles 49-21 on the glass and 19-10 in the assist department.

QUOTABLE
"It was nice to get back on the floor after that loss on Friday," Mike Jones said. "Certainly, it stung for a few days, so whenever you get a chance to get back on the floor and right some wrongs, it's a good feeling. We certainly started off a lot better this game than we did in the last, did not dig a hole for ourselves and were able to really ramp our defense up as the game went along. I'm always proud of a defensive effort when you can hold a team to 16 points in a half or a low (field goal) percentage and we did that in the second half. The second part of the first half, I thought we got a lot better. We just have to continue to understand that defense and rebounding is what wins games and we have to be better at that each and every time we step on the floor."
