RADFORD, Va. – The Radford women's basketball team continues its four-game road trip to open the season on Sunday afternoon when it takes on the (RV) West Virginia Mountaineers in a neutral-site game in Beckley, West Virginia at 2 p.m.
The Highlanders are coming off their first win of the season, a 60-45 triumph over South Carolina State on Nov. 12. Senior guard
Khiana Johnson has led Radford in scoring in each of the first two games, averaging 16.5 points per contest. Sophomore forward
Amele Ngwafang has stepped up for Radford and is averaging a double-double (12 points and 13 rebounds per game) through two games.
Head coach
Mike McGuire continues to utilize his bench in the early stages of the season, as 12 different Highlanders have seen playing time this year, including 10 in the last game against South Carolina State.
The Highlanders have been trending in an upward direction since the start of the year. Radford was picked to win the Big South Conferece, placed two on the preseason all-conference teams in Johnson and
Sydney Nunley and received votes in the first College Insider Mid-Major Poll of the Season.
Radford also has its eyes on climbing up the record books, as Johnson sits just 56 points away from reaching 1,000 for her career and
Jen Falconer is just 16 games away for setting a new Highlander record for career appearances.
A win on Sunday would give Radford its first win over a Big 12 opponent since a win over Kansas State in the 1988-89 season, when the Wildcats were a member of the now-defunct Big Eight Conference. The win would also be Radford's first-ever win over WVU, as the Mountaineers have a 2-0 edge in the all-time series.
West Virginia enters Sunday at 2-0 after defeating St. Francis (Pa.) and Presbyterian to begin the season. The Mountaineers are the first team out of the AP Top 25 with 59 points, just one point behind 25th-ranked South Florida. Kysre Gondrezick leads WVU in scoring at 22 points per game, while Esmery Martinez paces the Mountaineers with 9.5 rebounds per game.
