Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

RADFORD FALLS TO WEST VIRGINIA

BECKLEY, W.Va.—Radford took on West Virginia in a neutral site contest, falling 74-37 to the Mountaineers on Sunday. The Highlanders were led by Sydney Nunley's almost double-double of 12 points and nine rebounds.

Nunley opened the contest scoring all four of Radford's opening baskets, both off great assists from the backcourt duo of Jen Falconer and Khiana Johnson. Bringing the Highlanders within three, were made free throws by Johnson after a drive to the basket. Getting in on the scoring was Aiden Rainford who notched a jumper from the paint to cut the deficit to just four.

To open the second quarter, the Mountaineers mounted a 7-0 scoring run before Rainford's made free throw at 6:52. That basket ended the drought for the Highlanders who had gone solid minutes without scoring. Johnson's basket in the paint rallied Radford back on track but the deficit for the Highlanders had entered double digits.

Off a great feed from Johnson, Nunley was able to score in close to the basket. Radford tallied 32 field goal attempts between the first two quarters, but were only able to knock down seven of those. Heading into halftime, Tynice Martin's three-pointer with 48 seconds to go put West Virginia up 16 points over the Highlanders.

Radford was held to eight points in the third quarter with West Virginia adding 24 to their cause. The Highlanders' first three-pointer of the game was setup by Falconer as Johnson drained it from deep. Around the four-minute mark, Amele Ngwafang headed to the free throw line and knocked down one of the two allotted. Then came back-to-back scoring possessions for Radford from Nunley and Johnson. Nunley corralled the offensive rebound and laid it in. The basket was followed by Johnsons' pair of free throws which brought the Highlander total to 25 points. The Mountaineers would score four more times before the end of the quarter.

Radford adjusted and kept the scoring tight in the final quarter of play, posting 12 points to West Virginia's 17. Rainford won the battle for position on the low block, and was able to get the layup to go. Moments later Makaila Wilson drained the second three-pointer for the Highlanders, after a clutch steal from Bryonna McClean and an assist from Rainford.

A trip to the charity stripe for Wilson, pushed the Radford total over 30 points with 5:40 remaining. Taiye Johnson and Ariel Williams were subbed in and quickly made an impact off the bench. T. Johnson grabbed the offensive rebound and battled over several defenders to drain the basket. A defensive rebound and beautiful pass by McClean positioned Williams perfectly in the paint for the layup. Laney Corbin's free throw would be the final points for the Highlanders.

West Virginia had several with double digit points, led by Kysre Gondrezick who scored 22 points in her 30 minutes played.
