RADFORD TRAVELS TO EVANSTON FOR BIG TEN SHOWDOWN WITH NORTHWESTERN

RADFORD, Va. - The Radford men's basketball team continues its four-game road swing with a two-game trip to the state of Illinois. The first takes place in Evanston against Big Ten foe Northwestern on Tuesday night at 8 p.m. ET.

The Highlanders are coming off a nail-biting 76-73 loss to Georgia Southern on Friday night. Carlik Jones had a chance to tie the game at the end of regulation with a half-court heave but the shot went just long and hit the back iron. The Highlanders look to bounce back and Carlik Jones looks to etch his name in the Radford record books.

In just 70 career games played the redshirt junior has 980 points scored, needing just 20 to become the 32nd player in program history to join the 1,000-point club. The Cincinnati, Ohio native is averaging 23.0 points, 4.7 assists and 4.5 rebounds per game. The 2019-20 Big South Preseason Player of the Year is scoring efficiently shooting 53 percent from the floor and 50 percent from long range.

Offensively, Radford's 74.7 points per game ranks fifth in the Big South. On the other end of the floor the Highlander defense is a stout one only allowing 60.7 points per game, which ranks first in the league. Radford is also winning on the glass with a +11.0 rebounding margin against opponents and averaging 41.3 rebounds per game.

Devine Eke has been a major influence on the boards leading the team with 6.7 rebounds per game. He is also averaging eight points through 16.7 minutes off the bench.

Northwestern's season didn't start off on the right foot as Division I newcomer Merrimack spoiled its season opener, 71-61. The Wildcats got back on track after defending their home court against a tough Big East team in Providence on Wednesday night. NU shot 49 percent from the field in the victory, accentuated by a 44 percent mark from deep. The 'Cats also held the Friars to 31 percent shooting on the night, including an 8-for-35 total on 3-pointers.

Through two games sophomore forward Pete Nance is averaging a double-double for Chicago's Big Ten team. He has 14 points and 10 rebounds per game, while leading the team with 32.5 minutes played. The Akron, Ohio native is shooting 41 percent from the floor.

Opponents are outscoring Northwestern 67.0 to 66.5 so far through the young campaign. The Wildcats have held opponents to just 36 percent shooting from the floor and 26 percent from beyond the arc. The rebounding battle is as close as the point differential as NU is outrebounding its opponents by one, 37.5 to 36.5.

The Highlanders and Wildcats are meeting for just the second time in each program's history. The first came on Dec. 21, 1988 that saw Radford drop a seven-point contest to Northwestern, 96-89.

Tuesday's game can be seen on Big Ten Network Plus (BTN+), which is a direct-to-consumer video streaming subscription service offered by the Big Ten Network.
