SOFTBALL OPENS 2019 AT FAIRFIELD INN & SUITES SEAHAWK SOFTBALL BASH

RADFORD, Va. – The 2019 softball season is finally here for the Radford Highlanders as they open the year at the Fairfield Inn & Suites Seahawk Softball Bash hosted by UNCW.
 
The Highlanders will play five games in three days as Friday's doubleheader features the host at 3 p.m., and Rhode Island at 5:30 p.m. Saturday's games will be at the same time but feature a new opponent in Howard at 3 p.m., and Rhode Island again at 5:30 p.m. Radford will wrap up the tournament with Howard once more at 10 a.m., on Sunday.

HIGHLANDER HIGHLIGHTS
The Highlanders return a couple of core pieces to the roster with Maggie Rowe behind the plate and Kayla Huffman in the circle setting the tone as the battery. Rowe started 54 out of 55 games behind the plate in 2018. She led the team with 44 RBIs and added nine home runs along with a .265 batting average. Defensively, Rowe threw out 16 base runners, which led the Big South. Huffman topped the 2018 team with a 2.01 ERA and 108 strikeouts. She also posted an 11-5 record last season and is inside the top 10 in career strikeouts at Radford with 284. Rounding out the senior group is Hannah Medlam who will primarily play outfield in 2019.

 
ABOUT UNCW
The Seahawks enter with a 2-3 record after competing in the Joanne Graf Invitational hosted by Florida State. UNCW lost twice to No. 1 Florida State and once to UCNG, but also beat UNCG and Iowa State. In the circle, Rylee Pate brings in a 0.81 ERA with a 2-0 record. Offensively, Dominique Travers leads the team with a .462 batting average, a pair of home runs and three RBIs.
 
ABOUT RHODE ISLAND
Rhode Island opens play this weekend and was picked to finish eighth in the Atlantic 10 Conference.
 
ABOUT HOWARD
The Bison are currently 1-3 with their lone win coming against MEAC foe North Carolina Central. Howard has four players batting over .300 that started and played in all four games. Camille Navarro leads the team with six hits and a .500 batting average.
 
DID YOU KNOW?
The Highlanders began last season 4-0 after taking down Austin Peay, ETSU twich and Murray State once in the Eagle Round Robin in Statesboro, Ga.
