Game 1 Box Score
Game 2 Box Score

The Radford baseball team opened the 2019 campaign with a pair of losses to No. 11 ranked East Carolina on Friday in Greenville, North Carolina. The Pirates took the opener 6-2 and erupted for a 15-9 victory in the nightcap.

In game one, 2017 Big South Pitcher of the Year Zack Ridgely made a successful return to the mound after missing all of last season with an injury. Ridgely threw 83 pitches over 4.2 innings and did not factor in the decision. The lefty allowed two earned runs on six hits while walking three and fanning five Pirate batters.

Ridgely allowed a two-out bloop single in the opening inning by opposing pitcher Alec Burleson for the first run of the game.

The Highlanders answered in the top of the third as DH Garrett Matheny and CF Kyle Butler belted solo home runs to give the visitors a 2-1 lead.

The Pirates tied the contest at 2-2 in the bottom of the third as 2B Brady Lloyd executed a squeeze bunt with one out and runners standing on the corners.

Radford had scoring opportunities in the top of the fourth and again in the sixth but were unable to capitalize.

1B J.D. Mundy led off the fourth with a hustle double that deflected off the glove of Lloyd and into shallow right field. However, Mundy was stranded on second as the next three hitters were unable to drive the Virginia Tech transfer in.

LF Spencer Horwitz opened the sixth with a single and stole second base. RF Andrew Szamski then hit a rope deep to left but the swirling wind knocked a potential two-run homer down and landed in the glove of LF Bryant Packard.  Following a strikeout by Mundy, Highlander catcher Straton Podaras drew a walk and Horwitz advanced to third on a wild pitch.  However, SS Colby Higgerson flied out to right field to end the threat.

The hosts took the lead for good in the bottom of the sixth as Spencer Brickhouse hit a two-run shot off Radford reliever Austin Gerber.

ECU added two more runs in the bottom of the seventh off Bruce Hudson on a sacrifice fly and a two-out RBI single by Brickhouse.

Gerber took the loss as he allowed two earned runs in 1.1 innings of work.

The Highlanders managed four hits and had a pair of walks.

Radford struck first in the nightcap as Szamski (2-for-3) banged a two-run homer in the top of the first inning. Szamski's hard liner bounced in and out of the glove of LF Packard and went over the wall.

The Pirates answered right back with a two-run homer in the bottom of the inning by Bryson Worrell and added a sacrifice fly.

2B David Bryant (2-for-3) recorded his first career hit as he drilled an RBI double off the base of the right field wall to even the game in the top of the second.

ECU, however, responded with 10 runs in the bottom of the second to take command of the game. The Pirates had nine hits and the Highlanders made two errors in the frame.

Horwitz belted his first home run of the season and finished a perfect 3-for-3 on the evening. Clayton Baine launched a 3-run dinger in the top of the ninth for the final runs of the ball game.

Left-hander Hunter Williams took the loss as he allowed six earned runs in just an inning of work.
