Radford, Va. - - -Three Highlanders recorded double-doubles as the Radford women's basketball team defeated the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs, 79-69, on Tuesday evening at the Dedmon Center. The Highlanders, who have now won seven straight contests, remained in first place with a record of 9-1 in the Big South and upped their overall mark to 15-6.

Senior guard/forward Destinee Walker scored a game-high 19 points, grabbed 11 boards and went a career-best 9-of-9 from the free throw line. Redshirt junior forward Lydia Rivers, who scored her 600thcareer point, picked up her league-leading ninth double-double with 14 points and a game-high 15 boards.  Junior guard Khiana Johnson contributed 16 points and handed out a game-high six assists and redshirt junior forward Savannah Felgemacher returned to the lineup and posted 12 points and 10 rebounds in 20 minutes off the bench. Redshirt junior center Sydney Nunley (13 points, 2 blocks) came up a rebound shy of a double-double.

"Tonight was a hard-fought win and I thought Gardner-Webb played exceptionally well," stated head coach Mike McGuire. "They came in with a really different style. They brought a lot of full-court pressure, trapping and double-teaming. We have worked on getting off to a good start and being the aggressor. I think that {first quarter} was a big part of the difference in tonight's game."

Radford led from start to finish but could never completely blow the game open. It looked as if the hosts would cruise all night as they raced out to a 12-2 advantage with 4:03 left in the opening quarter. Rivers and Walker each had a couple of buckets and Nunley and Johnson also added layups. The Highlanders led 20-9 at the conclusion of the period as the hosts held the Bulldogs to 4-of-21 from the floor and outscored them by a count of 16-6 inside the paint.

The Highlanders widened their lead to 22-9 after a layup by Rivers with 9:26 left in the half, however, Gardner-Webb responded with a 21-9 surge to close within 31-30 with 1:43 left before the break.

Felgemacher then hit a clutch jumper to hold the visitors off, staking the Highlanders to a 33-30 advantage. Walker followed with a traditional 3-point play and Johnson added one-of-two from the line to make it 37-30 with thirty-one ticks left. Radford was able to go into the locker room with some momentum as Walker converted a layup just before the halftime buzzer to provide Radford with a 39-32 advantage.

Gardner-Webb (11-11, 5-5 Big South) managed to close within 43-37 after a layup by Robyn Bouwer at the 8:08 mark of the third quarter but Nunley and Johnson answered with consecutive layups.

Radford, who out-rebounded the visitors by a 54-36 total, extended their lead to a game-high of 15 points at 57-42 with 2:58 left in the third quarter after a layup by Makaila Wilson, which was initiated by a Felgemacher steal.

Gardner-Webb was able to get as close as seven points after a trifecta by Carley Plentovich (16 points) made it 72-65 with 2:22 left.

The Highlanders, who were 25-for-32 (78.1 percent) from the line on the evening, went 5-of-6 down the stretch to seal the victory.

Radford will travel to High Point on Saturday afternoon.
