RADFORD TAKES DOWN 4x400 SCHOOL RECORD AT VMI WINTER RELAYS

DAY ONE RECAP

LEXINGTON, Va. –
Another school record fell, as did several personal records, for the Radford track & field team on the second and final day of the 2019 VMI Winter Relays.

It may have been the last event of the day, but it was the most exciting for the Highlanders. Running in the 4x400-meter relay, Karah Foster, La'Tisha Chambers, Ryan Paine and Chancey Gunnell broke the Radford indoor school record with a time of 3:52.55.

The quartet's time toppled the previous record of 3:53.23 which was set by Caple, Cruz, Keener and Brandon back on Feb. 25, 2006. It's the second-fastest time for the 4x4 in the Big South this season as well.

Freshman distance runner Kayland Bond has been putting in the work with first-year Radford coach Sam Bradley and the resulted translated to the track on Saturday. She posted a huge lifetime PR in the mile with a time of 5:16.61, putting her in the top-10 of all runners in the Big South so far this season.

Bond, fresh off the mile, then recorded another PR in the 800 meters with a time of 2:25.39.

A pair of Highlanders – La'Tisha Chambers and Denisha Hoosier – had good times in the 200-meter dash. Chambers ran a 25.04, which ranks 8th on the Radford all-time list, to place third out of 50 competitors while Hoosier earned a new PR of 25.82 seconds, beating her previous best time of 25.99.

In the weight throw, freshman Mary Brown earned a huge PR with a distance of 12.94 meters (42'5.5") to finish in the top half of the field. Her previous best was 11.66 meters at the VMI Team Challenge so her improvements are really starting to show as well.

Kierra Henderson didn't quite get a PR, but she did advance to the long jump finals with a leap of 5.23 meters (17'2"). In the end she placed ninth out of more than 50 athletes.

YEAR OF BROKEN RECORDS
The Highlanders have already broken two school records in 2019. Chambers took down the 60-meter dash record just two weeks ago at the VMI Team Challenge with a time of 7.62 seconds.
