RADFORD, Va. – Welcome to the Radford Roundup, where fans can find out all the information they need on upcoming Radford Athletics events taking place between Friday, March 15th through Monday, March 18th.



 
 TRACK & FIELD
 

at 49ers Classic - Friday, March 15th and Saturday, March 16th
Where: Charlotte, N.C. (Irwin Belk Track & Field Center)

  • The Highlanders kick off the 2019 outdoor season with UNC Charlotte's 49ers Classic, marking the first time Radford has competed in the meet since 2009
  • Radford was picked to finish fifth out of nine teams in the Big South Preseason Poll with 43 points. Hampton took the top spot with 80 points and eight first-place votes
  • The 49ers Classic will feature around 1,750 participants from 54 schools as well as running clubs and unattached athletes

 LACROSSE
 

at Fresno State - Friday, March 15 @ 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT

  • The Highlanders fell, 8-17, in their first ever meeting with Fresno State last season. Callie Bonnel led the team with three goals while Juliette Ruland and Jennifer Shield added two each. Jenny Davis came up with 13 saves in goal.
  • The Bulldogs returned 16 letterwinners from last season and added five newcomers.
  • Five different players have scored double-digit goals including junior attacker Tiffiny Wallace, who leads the team with 18. She is also tied for the team lead with seven assists.
  • Junior Laurel Maunder has handled most of the work at goalie, making 90 saves for a .484 save percentage over 405 minutes. She has a 14.22 goals allowed average.

  • Radford and UC Davis went head-to-head in Harrisonburg, Va. last season due to inclement weather in the NRV. The Aggies barely escaped with a 12-11 overtime victory after the Highlanders scored the final four goals in regulation
  • UC Davis is in its second season under head coach Suzanne Isidor who was named the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Coach of the Year in 2018
  • All five All-MPSF honorees from a season ago returned this year for the Aggies including conference Player of the Year Taylor Cuenin
  • So far this season junior attacker Sorana Larson has been even better than Cuenin, scoring 21 goals and tallying three assists. Junior attacker Amanda Outlcalt "only" has 14 goals, but she leads UC Davis in points thanks to 24 assists.
 
 BASEBALL

  • Radford returns to action to open Big South play after splitting a two-game set with UMass Lowell during the midweek.
  • Senior left-hander Andrew Nardi pitched five scoreless innings and junior designated hitter J.D. Mundy drove in four runs to help lead the Highlanders to an 8-3 victory against UMass Lowell, on Wednesday evening at Carter Memorial Stadium.
  • Nardi (1-0) was spectacular as he allowed just four hits and a walk against the 19 batters he faced. Nardi, who also fanned a pair of batters, recorded seven ground outs and induced five fly balls. 
  • Reliever Bruce Hudson was also extremely impressive out of the bullpen as he failed to allow a hit and struck out a pair over his two scoreless frames.
  • Mundy went 1-for-3 with a double, RBI groundout and a sacrifice fly while right fielder Andrew Szamski went 2-for-3 with a double and a triple. Left fielder Adam Whitacre, the reigning Big South Player of the Week, went 3-for-4 with an RBI.
  • Whitacre leads the Highlanders in batting (.391), home runs (4), RBI (14), slugging (.761), total bases (35). He is also tied with David Bryant for the team-lead in steals (5).
  • Szamski is off to a tremendous start as well as he is batting .339 with three homers and 13 RBI.
  • Reliever Cameron Fritz and Ryan Bywaters have been outstanding out of the pen. Fritz has a team-low 2.38 ERA with a team-high 14 strikeouts over 11.1 innings. Bywaters owns a 2.45 ERA with seven punch outs over 7.1 innings.
  • Zack RidgelyGraham Firoved and Cole Dunn are expected to start against the Blue Hose in the series.
  • Presbyterian has lost five straight, including a three-game sweep to No. 9 ranked Georgia. 
  • Jimmy Marcelli leads Presbyterian with a .385 batting average.  
  • Nick Guimbarda has a team-best three home runs and 14 RBI.
  • Jackson Dean (1-2, 4.43 ERA) has been the top starter thus far for the Blue Hose.
  • Matt Norton (2.25 ERA) has been solid in his seven appearances out of the bullpen.
 
 MEN'S TENNIS
 

at Marist - Friday, March 15 at 3:30 p.m.

  • Radford is coming off a win against Lehigh and a loss against College of Charleston during the spring break trip in Charleston, S.C.
  • Alexandros Caldwell is the only Highlander with a pair of singles wins this week.
  • Matko Varga won his singles match against College of Charleston but lost his match against Lehigh, while Michiel Meekers was opposite and lost his match against CofC but won his match against Lehigh. Both players are 8-1 this season.
  • Marist (3-5) will begin back-to-back-to-back matches on Friday. They will take on Radford, College of Charleston (Saturday) and The Citadel (Sunday).

at The Citadel - Saturday, March 16 at 10 a.m.

Records: Radford (7-2) | The Citadel (8-17)
  • The Citadel (8-17) has lost three of its last five matches.
  • The most recent loss came against Lehigh in a 2-5 match.
  • Phillip Quinn is the only Bulldog with an above .500 record with a 12-10.
 
 WOMEN'S GOLF
 

at Low Country Intercollegiate - Friday, March 15 and Saturday, March 16

  • Freshman sensation Beatriz Mosquera Quintas won her first career tournament as the native of La Coruna, Spain defeated 50 competitors at the 2019 Benbow Invitational, which was held at Blue Sky Golf Club this past Monday and Tuesday.
  • Mosquera Quintas fired a 73 (+1) on the par 72, 6,143-yard course to grab a share of a four-way tie for the top of the leader board yesterday and was even better on Tuesday, finishing with a  71 (-1) for a two-day score of 144 (even). She finished five strokes ahead of her closest competitor, Laila Fortsmane from Eckerd College.
  • The Highlanders finished second out of eight squads with a combined total of 617 (311-306). Youngstown State won the event with a score of 606 (298-308). The squad has four Top 3 finishes, including two runner-up finishes over their last four tournaments. 
  • Sidney Walker (78-79-157) and Riko Nagai (78-79-157) tied for 16th-place as they were extremely impressive as well.
  • Kasidy Beckel (T-20, 82-77-159) and Natalie Welsh (T-33, 82-83-165) rounded out the scoring.
  • Hannah Tuttle (79-81-160) competed as an individual.

 SOFTBALL
 

at Charleston Southern – Friday, March 15 @ 4 p.m. | Saturday, March 16 @ Noon and 2 p.m. (DH)

  • Errors and runners left on base were the two main factors in the 8-4 loss to Elon on Wednesday night.
  • The Highlanders left 12 runners on base and committed five errors against the Phoenix.
  • Destiny Freeman became the second Highlander to pick up four RBIs in a game this season when she drove in all four runs against Elon. The first player that drove in four runs is another true freshman in Brooke Bond, who collected four against Howard on Feb. 17. Both are career-highs for the freshmen.
  • The Highlanders are hitting .268 as a team and have collected 155 hits.
  • Sydney Fisher has a team-high 33 hits and 12 RBIs, which is second on the team.
  • With her four RBIs on Wednesday, Freeman now leads the team with 13 RBIs.
  • Charleston Southern (6-22) has wins against Dayton, UMES, Detroit Mercy, UNC Wilmington and Cleveland State.
  • Annie Bakenhus leads the team offensively with a .337 batting average and 29 hits, while Arizona Pilgrim leads the team in the circle with a 4.48 ERA and 69 strikeouts through 84.1 innings pitched.
