 WOMEN'S GOLF
 

at Walnut Cove Collegiate - Monday, March 25 and Tuesday, March 26
Where: Asheville, N.C.
Live Results
  • The Radford women's golf team finished ninth out of 16 squads in their last outing at the 2019 Low Country Intercollegiate.
  • Radford shot a combined team-score of 312 in their second round, eight strokes better than their opening round performance.
  • The Highlanders recorded a two-round score of 632 (+56).
  • Riko Nagai led the Highlanders with a two-day total of 155 (78-75, +11) to finish in a tie for 22nd-place. 
  • Natalie Welsh (78-70-158) and Sidney Walker (81-77-158) tied for 32nd overall (+14).  
  • Beatriz Mosquera Quintas (T-40, 83-78-161, +17) and Kasidy Beckel (T-80, 87-86-173, ++29) rounded out the scoring for Radford.

  • Radford returns to action after earning a three-game sweep of Big South rival Charleston Southern over the weekend.
  • Senior third baseman Matt Roth homered and drove in the game-winning run to help lead the Highlanders to an extra-inning victory against the Bucs in the series opener.
  • Cameron Fritz continued his terrific work out of the Highlander bullpen as the senior pitched four scoreless frames to pick up his second victory of the season. The right-hander whiffed eight Buc batters, did not walk a batter and allowed just three hits.
  • Starter, senior left-hander Zack Ridgely, was terrific as he did not allow an earned run in six innings for a no-decision. Ridgely no-hit the hosts for the first five innings before surrendering three unearned runs in the sixth inning.
  • The Highlanders scored four runs in the top of the first inning and went on to defeat the Buccaneers, 7-1, on Saturday afternoon. 
  • Designated hitter J.D. Mundy connected on a 2-2 pitch with one out in the first inning, a three-run shot over the right center field wall to highlight the Highlanders' big first frame. It was his team-leading sixth round tripper of the season and scored first baseman Spencer Horwitz (single) and right fielder Andrew Szamski (single).Left fielder Adam Whitacre followed Mundy with a homer to right center, his fifth of the season
  • Radford came up with some ninth inning magic as the Highlanders scored five runs in their final at bat, en route to a 9-6 victory on Sunday afternoon against the Charleston Southern Buccaneers. 
  • Radford's first three batters in the lineup combined to go 8-for-14 with two homers and eight RBI in the contest. First baseman Spencer Horwitz (2-for-4, HR, 2B, 3 RBI) produced the game-winning hit with a one-out, two-run double in the top of the ninth. Right fielder Andrew Szamski (3-for-5, HR, 4 RBI) and second baseman Kyle Butler (3-for-5, RBI) also had clutch hits in the ninth.
  • Radford's pitchers held Charleston Southern to a .202 batting average and fanned 27 batters in their 3-game series.
  • 1B Spencer Horwitz went 5-for-13 with two homers, 13 total bases and 5 RBI in the series...He is a team-best 8-for-23 (.348) with runners in scoring position this season.
  • RF Andrew Szamski went 5-for-15 and drove in five runs...Szamski is 8 for his last 20 with 7 RBI's over a 4-game stretch.
  • DH J.D. Mundy hit a pair of homers and drove in four against the Bucs…Mundy is tied for 2nd in the league in home runs (6) and RBI (22).
  • The Mountaineers took two of three over the weekend from Sun Belt Rival Louisiana.
  • Luke Drumheller is off to a torrid start as he is batting .416 with 10 doubles and 25 RBI in 19 starts. Riley Smith is batting .308 and has a team-high three home runs along with 13 RBI.
  • Austin Primm is scheduled to make his first start of the season against the Highlanders. Primm has not allowed an earned run in 3.2 innings out of the bullpen.

 
 SOFTBALL
 

vs. Virginia - Tuesday, March 26 at 6 p.m.

  • Radford posted a 3-2 record last week that included a series win over Gardner-Webb.
  • The first win saw 10 runs scored, no errors and a two-run performance from Kayla Huffman in a complete team victory. Huffman performed at a high level in a 2-1 series clinching victory to cap off the weekend.
  • Huffman's performance led her to become Big South Pitcher of the Week.
  • Another Highlander that garnered a weekly honor was Destiny Freeman, who was named the conference's freshman of the week.
  • Freeman contributed four runs and five hits, including a pair of home runs. She kicked things off with a home run and two runs batted in against Norfolk State before recording her fourth multi-hit game of the season against Gardner-Webb that also featured a homer and two RBIs.
  • Sydney Fisher is still red hot at the plate leading all Big South in batting average with a .413 batting average. The sophomore is one of three Big South players with an above .400 batting average.
  • Virginia enters with a 16-13 record and is coming off a series loss to Duke at home.
  • Lacy Smith leads the Cavaliers offensively with a .473 batting average, 12 home runs and 31 RBIs.
  • Pitching has been the issue for UVA as six different players have made an appearance in the circle. Aly Rayle and Allyson Frei have made the most appearances with a combined 30 appearances and 21 starts. Rayle enters with a 6-2 record and Frei has a 5-8 record.
  • The Cavaliers are 5-5 on the road this season.
at Virginia Tech - Wednesday, March 27 at 6 p.m.

  • The Highlanders are looking to avenge a tough five inning loss to Virginia Tech back on Feb. 27th
  • Virginia Tech has won 14 of their last 16 games since facing Radford including a win over No. 8 Georgia.
  • The Hokies are ranked No. 24 in the ESPN/USA Softball Poll and have won 10 in a row, including a sweep over Pittsburgh.
  • Darby Trull is one of three players with a batting average higher than .400 as she's batting .452 with 38 hits.
  • Emma Strouth has seven home runs with a team-high 41 RBIs. She's also batting .410.
  • Carrie Eberle has a 1.66 ERA with a 16-1 record and 79 strikeouts through 109.1 innings pitched.

 
 WOMEN'S TENNIS

  • The Highlanders suffered a tough loss to Presbyterian on Saturday afternoon.
  • However, Radford has won three of the last five matches including a conference win over Longwood.
  • Drousile Dzeubou has a team-high 10 wins with Anastasia Belyaeva only one win behind her at nine.
  • The freshman Malin Falk has been a key component with an 8-6 record playing as the No. 3.
 
 MEN'S TENNIS
 

at Winthrop - Wednesday, March 27 at 2 p.m.
Where: Rock Hill, S.C. (Rock Hill Tennis Center)

  • Radford is looking to build off a strong 4-3 victory over Davidson, which came on Sunday afternoon.
  • Michiel Meekers picked up his 12th victory of the season, which leads the team.
  • Alexandros Caldwell also added to his win total and is now 11-2, while Matko Varga has a 10-4 record.
  • The Highlanders have increased their win by one with seven more matches to play this season. Radford only won 10 games last season and have 11 wins this year.
