Radford, Va. – Freshman right-hander Cole Dunn limited the Winthrop Eagles to just four hits and one unearned run over five innings to help lead the Radford baseball team to a 13-3 victory and a three-game Big South conference sweep on Sunday at frigid Carter Memorial Stadium.  The Highlanders (7-2 BSC) have now won eight straight contests and climbed over the .500 mark (14-13) for the first time this season.Â
Â
Dunn (1-1) walked just one Eagle as he faced 21 batters in the contest.  The Middletown, Delaware native induced seven groundouts, fanned one and recorded six fly ball outs.
Â
The Highlanders continued to rake as the hosts produced 13 hits after a 21-hit barrage on Saturday. Radford outscored Winthrop (14-13, 6-3 BSC) by a 38-18 margin in the series. Â
Â
Center fielder Kyle Butler recorded a game-high three hits as he finished 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored.  Designated hitter J.D. Mundy (2-for-3, 2 RBI, walk, 2 runs) and second baseman David Bryant (2-for-3, 2 RBI) each added two hits.  Right fielder Andrew Szamski went 1-for-2 with a pair of RBI and completed the series 10-for-13 (.769) with three doubles, two homers and 12 RBI.
Â
Szamski gave Radford a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning as he lifted a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Butler who got things started with a sharp single up the middle.
Â
The Eagles evened the game in the top of the second with an unearned run.  Right fielder Hunter Lipscomb, who reached on an error by Bryant, scored on an RBI groundout by third baseman Jake Sullivan.
Â
Dunn cruised through the next three innings and was the beneficiary of a Highlander eight-run outburst in the bottom of the fifth. Radford recorded three hits and Winthrop walked five batters, plunked another and committed a fielding error in the game-changing frame. Â
Â
Amazingly, all eight runs came after there were two outs in the inning.  Szamski drew a bases-loaded walk for the go-ahead run. Mundy followed with a two-run single and catcher Straton Podaras drew an RBI walk. Third baseman Matt Roth made it 6-1 when he reached on an error, bringing Szamski home. Shortstop Colby Higgerson followed with an RBI walk and Bryant capped the inning with a two-run single to right field.
Â
The Highlanders added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth as left fielder Adam Whitacre delivered an RBI single to left and Roth added an RBI on a fielder's choice groundout.
Â
Pinch-hitter Anthony Miano delivered the final blow, a two-run homer to right field in the bottom of the eighth.
Â
Andrew Nardi (2.0 innings, no hits, no runs 4 strikeouts), Ryan Bywaters (1.0 inning, no hits, no runs) and Evan Threehouse (1.0 inning, no hits, 2 unearned runs) pitched the final four innings without allowing an earned run.
Â
Radford will travel to East Tennessee State on Tuesday evening before returning home next weekend for a three-game conference set with USC-Upstate.
