Radford, Va. - - - The Radford women's basketball team defeated the Hampton Pirates, 84-49, avenging their lone loss of the Big South Conference season on Wednesday evening at the Dedmon Center. The Highlanders improved to 22-6 overall and are now 16-1 in the league standings with just one regular-season contest remaining.  The 16 league wins are also a new single-season program record.

Three different Highlanders produced double-doubles on the evening as Radford pulled away from the Pirates after trailing at the end of the opening quarter.  Redshirt-junior forward Lydia Rivers registered 16 points and 13 rebounds for her conference-leading twelfth double-double. Classmates Sydney Nunley (12 points, game-high 18 boards) and Savannah Felgemacher (10 points, 11 caroms) produced their eleventh and seventh double-doubles respectively. Senior guard/forward Destinee Walker scored a game-high 21 points and added five rebounds while junior guard Khiana Johnson contributed 11 points and five assists.

Radford, who has now extended their program-record win streak to 14, held Hampton to just 20-of-69 shooting for a 29 percent clip and out-rebounded the Pirates by a 59-25 margin.

The Highlanders got off to a slow start as they were held to 26.7 percent shooting in the opening quarter and trailed 10-9 after the first ten minutes.

Radford took control in the second quarter as they outscored the Pirates by a 21-11 margin to grab a 30-21 lead at the break. The Highlanders shot 50 percent from the floor in the stanza and Radford's bench outscored Hampton by a 9-0 margin.

Freshman guard Makaila Wilson came off the bench and drained a pair of treys to get the offense going and Walker and Rivers both delivered a pair of buckets. Wilson gave Radford their first lead of the quarter at 12-10 with a triple off a feed by Rivers at the 9:48 mark. She then gave the hosts the lead for good, 17-14, after sophomore forward Tina Lindenfeld found her with 7:56 remaining.

Hampton (15-13, 11-6 BSC) was within 23-18 after a jumper by Mahaley Holit (19 points) at the 1:34 mark, however, Walker converted two free throws and Lindenfeld buried a 3-pointer with just under a minute remaining to widen the lead to 28-18.

The Highlanders stretched their lead to 41-27 at the 6:54 mark of the third quarter after Nunley scored inside but the visitors made one final push to get back in the game. Hampton scored seven straight points to trim the deficit to 41-34 at the 5:15 mark. Kaylah Lupoe started the spurt with a 3-point play and then Ashley Bates (18 points) followed with a layup and a pair of free throws.

Radford, however, kept their composure and responded with seven straight points of their own to re-claim a 14-point advantage at the 2:28 mark.  Walker ignited the charge with a trifecta and then added a pair of free throws. Felgemacher and Rivers both went 1-of-2 from the stripe to complete the run.

The Highlanders took a 54-42 lead into the final quarter and wasted little time putting the game out of reach.  Radford, who shot a sizzling 75 percent (12-of-16) in the final stanza, outscored the Pirates by a 13-2 margin over the first 3:10 of the quarter to take a commanding 67-44 lead. Walker again knocked down a trifecta to kick-off the run and had seven points during the burst.  Johnson also sprinkled in a long-distance bomb to cap the run.

Hampton was only able to get as close as 17 points for the remainder of the contest.

Radford finished 30-for-59 overall from the floor for a 50.8 percent clip, including 8-of-18 (44.4 percent) from long-distance.
