HIGHLANDERS GAIN 6-2 COMEBACK VICTORY AGAINST BIG SOUTH LEADER CAMPBELL

Buies Creek, N.C. - The Radford baseball team defeated the Big South Conference leading Campbell Camels, 6-2, in the first game of a three-game set on Friday evening at Jim Perry Stadium.  The game was delayed three hours due to heavy rain in the area and did not end until early Saturday morning.  Radford, who recorded 12 hits, improved to 17-16 overall and 9-4 in the conference.

Left-hander Zack Ridgely was sensational as he allowed just one earned run over six innings of work, improving to 2-2. The senior scattered four hits, walked none and fanned three Camels.

Reliever Bruce Hudson pitched three scoreless innings, whiffed two and did not allow a hit to record his first career save.

First baseman Spencer Horwitz went 2-for-4 with a walk and 2 runs batted in while second baseman David Bryant was 2-for-4 and had the game-winning hit. Shortstop Colby Higgerson drove in a pair of runs, including a game-tying double. Right fielder Andrew Szamski extended his hitting streak to 12 games with a 2-for-5 performance. Third baseman Matt Roth was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI.

Campbell (21-13, 10-3 Big South) got on the board first with an unearned run off Ridgely in the bottom of the second inning.  Right fielder Grant Harris reached base on a one-out error by Bryant and then took second on a passed ball.  First baseman Kolby Jones followed with a bloop double just out of the reach of center fielder Kyle Butler.  Second baseman Tyler Anshaw then executed an RBI sac bunt to bring in Harris.

The Camels made it 2-0 with a pair of hits in the bottom of the third.  Luis Gimenez lashed a one-out double down the left field line and eventually scored on a double steal.

Radford had a golden opportunity in the top of the fifth inning when they loaded the bases off starter Seth Johnson with just one out.  Roth doubled to right center to open the inning and left fielder Carlin Christian laced a one-out single to put runners at the corners.  Butler then drew a walk to load the bases for Horwitz. However, Horwitz flied out to short right field and Roth did not test the arm of Harris. Designated hitter J.D Mundy missed a grand slam by a hair when he sent a long drive that was hauled in by center fielder AJ Hrica at the wall in left center to end the threat.

The Highlanders finally cashed in as they evened the game with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth inning.  Higgerson drilled a clutch, two-run double to right center field with two outs, scoring Roth (walk) and Bryant (single, stolen base).

Radford took their first lead at 3-2 in the top of the seventh when Bryant went the other way for an RBI single to score Mundy on a close play at the plate. Mundy had reached on a walk and advanced to second on a single by Szamski.

Horwitz recorded a two-run opposite field single with two outs in the eighth inning to stake Radford to a 5-2 advantage.  Roth reached on an error to open the inning and pinch hitter Jimmy Goldsmith came through with a sharp single to center.

Roth added another two-out RBI single to make it 6-2 in the ninth.

Game two of the series will get underway at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday.
