RADFORD ROUNDUP: APRIL 9-11



RADFORD, Va. – Welcome to the Radford Roundup, where fans can find out all the information they need on upcoming Radford Athletics events taking place between Tuesday, April 9th and Thursday, April 11th.


 
 BASEBALL
 

vs. VMI - Tuesday, April 9 at 6 p.m.
Where: Radford, Va. (Carter Memorial Stadium)
Records: Radford (15-16, 8-4 Big South) | VMI (8-24, 4-5 SoCon)

  • The Highlanders will host local rival VMI on Tuesday evening at Carter Memorial Stadium.  Radford defeated the Keydets by a score of 14-5 in Lexington on March 19.  Andrew Nardi came out of the pen to toss six scoreless innings to earn the win and designated hitter J.D. Mundy homered and doubled.
  • Right fielder Andrew Szamski has a 10-game hitting streak and is hitting .561 with four homers and 22 RBI's during the stretch. Szamski is also batting .431 with 22 RBI's in 12 conference games. He ranks 35th in the country in RBI's per game (1.23) and is 42nd in batting (.395).
  • First baseman Spencer Horwitz has a season-high six game hitting streak.
  • Second baseman David Bryant is 9-for-22 (.409) with runners in scoring position.
  • Reliever Bruce Hudson has not allowed an earned run over his last 13.2 innings and now owns a stellar 2.55 ERA in 24.2 innings of work. He is 3-1 with a 0.57 ERA over 15.2 innings in Big South contests.
  • Reliever Cameron Fritz is 3-0 in league games with a 1.64 ERA in 11.0 innings of work.
  • Radford is 11-0 when leading after eight innings but are 1-12 when trailing entering the ninth.
  • The Highlanders are fifth in the nation in home runs per game (1.45) and are 37th in scoring (7.0 runs pg.).
  • Jake Huggins is hitting a team-high .287 and leads VMI with 22 RBI's while Josh Holifield is batting .280.
  • The Keydets are hitting just .229 overall and their pitching staff owns a 5.82 ERA.
  • Starters Jacob Menders (2-2, 3.22 ERA) and Zak Kent (4-2, 3.31 ERA) have combined for six of the Keydets' victories.
 
 SOFTBALL
 

at Duke - Tuesday, April 9 at 6 p.m.
Where: Durham, N.C. (Duke Softball Stadium)
Records: Radford (18-21, 8-4 Big South) | Duke (19-22, 8-7 ACC)
  • Radford has won seven of its last 10 games and has been trending upwards since the end of March with three consecutive series wins, including one sweep.
  • This weekend the Highlanders took two of three from Winthrop by erasing a seven-run deficit on Friday night and recording their first shutout of the season in the series finale.
  • Sydney Fisher tallied nine hits in the series, including a five-hit contest on Saturday. She became the first player with a five-hit game since 2009.
  • Fisher now leads the Big South with a .435 batting average and 60 hits. She is only five hits away from cracking the single-season top 10 list at Radford.
  • Radford has a tough stretch that includes Duke, Longwood and USC Upstate all over the next seven games. The first is at Duke on Tuesday night followed by Longwood on Thursday night.
  • Duke has a 19-22 record in just its second season as a program. In year one, they finished 29-27 and 13-11 in the ACC.
  • The Blue Devils were just swept by No. 24 Virginia Tech but earned a pair of wins against Longwood in the midweek doubleheader.
  • Jameson Kavel is batting .313 with 12 doubles and four triples. She has swiped 13 stolen bases this season.
  • Duke has a 3.24 team ERA as Peyton St. George and Brianna Butler have a sub-3.00 ERA. The duo has six wins each, while Butler leads the team in innings pitched (95.0).
vs. Longwood - Thursday, April 11 at 5 p.m.
Where: Radford, Va. (Radford Softball Stadium)
Records: Radford (18-21, 8-4 Big South) | Longwood (24-13, 11-1 Big South)
  • Thursday features a pair of top-notch pitching staffs as Longwood comes to town in game one of a three-game set.
  • Radford ranks second in the conference in team ERA (3.31).
  • Jessie Marvin and Kayla Huffman both rank in the conference's top 10 in ERA. Marvin ranks fifth with a 2.82 ERA and Huffman ranks eighth with a 3.08 ERA.
  • Longwood enters the lone conference game with a 24-13 record including an 11-1 conference record. The lone loss came at the hands of Winthrop in Rock Hill in the opening Big South series.
  • The first place Lancers host Virginia in a Tuesday evening game before traveling to Radford on Thursday.
  • Offense hasn't been the strong suit for Longwood, and they rank seventh in the Big South with a .265 team batting average.
  • However, pitching has been key as they rank third in the conference with a 3.50 ERA.
  • Sydney Gay has an 8-6 record with a 2.87 ERA and 51 strikeouts.

 WOMEN'S TENNIS
 

vs. Bluefield State - Wednesday, April 10 at 2 p.m.
Where: Radford, Va. (Radford Tennis Complex)
Records: Radford (10-8, 5-4 Big South) | Bluefield State (0-12)
  • The women's tennis team has wrapped up conference play and finished with a winning record for the first time in 10 plus years.
  • Radford still has a pair of home matches before the Big South Tournament and the first is Bluefield State on Wednesday.
  • Drousile Dzeubou is tied for 10th in the Big South with 13 wins – 12 of them came while playing as the No. 2. She has the second most wins as the No. 2. 
 
 MEN'S TENNIS

at Campbell - Wednesday, April 10 at 2 p.m.
Where: Buies Creek, N.C. (Nisbet Tennis Center)
Records: Radford (12-4, 5-2 Big South) | Campbell (12-4, 5-1 Big South)
  • Radford suffered a tough loss to Presbyterian on Sunday but looks to bounce back with Campbell on Wednesday.
  • The Highlanders are 5-2 in the Big South and the Fighting Camels are 5-1 and face Hampton on Monday afternoon.
  • Michiel Meekers and Alexandros Caldwell have shown true leadership and rank inside the top 10 in singles winning percentage. The duo has 27 wins together and have 10 wins apiece as the No. 3 and No. 4 players, which is best in the Big South.
