WOMEN’S BASKETBALL ADDS A PAIR OF STANDOUT SIGNEES TO 2019 RECRUITING CLASS

RADFORD, Va. – The women's basketball program is excited about the addition a couple of standout players in Rachel LaLonde and Ariel Williams to the 2019 recruiting class, head coach Mike McGuire announced on Friday.

Rachel LaLonde, a 6'1" forward from North Carolina, was a First Team All-County and All-NPC Conference selection while earning Second Team All-District honors her senior year. She averaged 15.0 points, 7.5 rebounds, 4.5 assists, 2.0 blocks and 1.6 steals per game to help lead the Raiders to the second round of the state playoffs.

"Rachel LaLonde is a welcomed addition to our women's basketball program," said Coach McGuire. "In my opinion, Rachel flew way under the radar in this region and we feel like we have a diamond in the rough. Rachel is a skilled, versatile forward that is comfortable playing different positions on the floor. Along with her versatility, I love her competitive mindset and toughness. Rachel has huge upside and will have an opportunity to contribute as soon as she steps on campus. We look forward to helping her reach her potential."

A product of North Iredell High School, LaLonde finished her illustrious high school career with more than 1,100 points scored, seeing time as both a small forward and a power forward. LaLonde also excelled in the classroom, earning a 3.74 grade point average as a member of the National Technical Honors Society.

"I really like the supportive coaching staff and the welcoming campus," LaLonde noted when asked why she chose Radford. "I am very competitive and want to win, and I know that the coaches and players at Radford deliver wins."

Ariel Williams, a 5'9" guard, previously played at Western Oklahoma State College in Altus, Okla. She averaged 17.5 points per game last season with 6.1 rebounds per game and 2.9 assists. She is rated the 75th best sophomore junior college prospect in the country by All Star Girls Report.

"We are happy to welcome Ariel Williams from Arlington, Texas," McGuire added. "Ariel is a dynamic guard that can really score the ball at all levels. She scored over 1,000 points in two seasons at the junior college level. More importantly, I love what she stands for on and off the court. She values hard work and expects to win."

She tallied seven 20+ point games for the Lady Pioneers last year and added three with 30 or more. Along with the stellar scoring performances, Williams picked up nine double-doubles a season ago. Prior to junior college, Williams played at Lamar High School in Arlington, Texas where she was a two-time Second Team All-Region selection.

LaLonde and Williams join an already loaded signing class for the Highlanders which includes Aiden Rainford (Toronto, Ontario), Kinsley Lewis (Liberty/Sumerduck, Va.), Taiye Johnson (Meadowbrook/Chesterfield, Va.) and Diane Nicholson (Central Bucks West/Collegeville, Pa.).
