NO. 20 N.C. STATE TAKES GAME ONE OF WEEKEND SERIES

RALEIGH, N.C. – A quality start from redshirt senior Zack Ridgely and some patient at-bats throughout the lineup weren't quite enough to keep the Radford baseball team from falling, 6-3, to No. 20 N.C. State at Doak Field on Friday night.
Â
Going at least six innings for the sixth time this season, Ridgely gave the Highlanders (23-22) a chance against a very talented Wolfpack club by giving up just three runs (two earned) on six hits and a walk across 6.0 innings. He struck out two and needed just 78 pitches.
Â
The Wolfpack (35-12) struck first, grabbing a 1-0 lead with a pair of 2-out doubles in the third inning. Ridgely settled down to get the third out and his teammates picked him up with two runs of their own in the top of the fourth.
Â
Junior first baseman Spencer Horwitz delivered Radford's first hit of the night with a leadoff single before Andrew Szamski was hit by a pitch and J.D. Mundy drew a nine-pitch walk to load the bases. A late addition to the lineup, freshman David Bryant looped an RBI single into left field and then Matt Roth drew another walk to push across another run.
Â
It wasn't until the bottom of the fifth when N.C. State reclaimed its lead, taking advantage of a defensive miscue to get runners into scoring position which set up a two-run double by Evan Edwards, making it 3-2.
Â
Three more runs came across to score in the seventh inning, but even a 6-2 lead appeared to be in danger as the game reached its climax. Down to their last chance, the Highlanders loaded the bases in the ninth inning thanks to a Mundy single, a Bryant walk and a second free pass for Roth. Redshirt junior shortstop Colby Higgerson saw ball four go by to score Mundy, but the rally ended with the go-ahead run at the plate.
Â
Radford's offense was limited to just four hits on the night, but it drew seven walks to provide a steady diet of baserunners. Horwitz had the most success with the bat, finishing 2-for-4 with a run scored.
