RADFORD OPENS 2019 CAMPAIGN WITH 3-0 VICTORY OVER APPALACHIAN STATE

RADFORD, Va. – It was a perfect night on at Cupp Stadium as the Radford women's soccer team blanked Appalachian State on Friday to open the 2019 season.

Gabi Paupst stole the show scoring twice in a match for the first time in her career. She is the first player to have a multi-goal match since Nov. 2, 2018. However, Nicole Ray notched the game-winning goal in the 22nd minute that gave Radford a 1-0 advantage. The goal came when Emily Dunn crossed the ball and it went through the outstretched hands of the Mountaineer goalkeeper and found its way to Ray, who had a wide-open net from five yards out. The senior knocked it home and put Radford on the board.

Just one minute after the Highlander's first goal of 2019, Dunn found Paupst on a free kick who headed it to left of the keeper and gave Radford a 2-0 edge. Paupst wasn't done as she tallied another score when Brianna Oliver sent a ball into the box off a corner kick. It landed to Kayla Thomas who headed it to Paupst with an open goal in front of her. The junior finished it off and gave Radford its third goal of the first half.

The remainder of the game was relatively back and forth with possession, but Courtenay Kaplan and Lexi Dean kept Appalachian State off the scoreboard. Each keeper had three saves, but none were more impressive than Dean's second save which came in the 88th minute after a shot was rifled at the top left part of the goal. Dean sprung in the air, caught the ball and kept her footing and the ball in front of the goal line to preserve the shutout.

The Mountaineers totaled more shots than Radford, 12-7, but the Highlanders scored three goals off seven shots. Five of the shots came in the first half and so did all three goals.
