RADFORD TAKES CARE OF MOUNT ST. MARY’S ON THE ROAD WITH 2-0 VICTORY

EMMITSBURG, Md. – The Radford women's soccer team carried some momentum into Waldron Family Stadium on Sunday afternoon and left with even more momentum and a 2-0 victory over Mount St. Mary's.

The Highlanders were able to get two first half goals, which were all they needed to hold on for the victory. Nelia Perez scored the first goal in the 14th minute as Kayla Thomas corralled a rebound shot off the crossbar and played it to Perez, who headed it in for the score. It was Perez's first goal of the 2019 season.

After recording her second assist of the season, Thomas was able to pick up her first goal of the year in the 28th minute. This goal, much like the first, came when a shot bounced back into the box after hitting the crossbar. It bounced its way through traffic and to the sophomore, who kicked it to the right side of the keeper for the second Radford goal of the game.

The defense did an outstanding job once again and has not given up a goal through the first 180 minutes of play. Courtenay Kaplan and Lexi Dean each played 45 minutes in goal. Kaplan tallied four saves in the first half, while Dean had one in the second.

Kaplan made an impressive save in the 40th minute when a ball found its way to an open Mountaineer just outside of the six-yard box that put a good foot onto it but the senior dove to her right and knocked the ball out of bounds.

Radford took six shots in the second half and Mount St. Mary's took seven but neither team scored. Nine of Radford's shots landed on goal, while five of the Mountaineers shots were on frame.

QUOTABLE
"It was a good team win today," Ben Sohrabi said. "I liked the way we moved the ball. We had a good mix of possession and attacking soccer. It was great to see Kayla and Nelia get on the scoresheet as well. I'm proud of the way our defense has opened the season with two shutouts. We played several players in different roles and the level of play remained solid."

UP NEXT
