PAUPST'S LATE GOAL CARRIES RADFORD TO 1-0 VICTORY OVER WINTHROP

RADFORD, Va.Gabi Paupst netted the lone goal of the contest and it proved to be the difference maker as the Radford women's soccer team earned a 1-0 victory over Winthrop on Saturday night at Cupp Stadium.

Paupst picked up her third goal of the season in the 79th minute. Brianna Oliver found the junior about 15 yards away from the goal on a corner kick. Paupst kicked the ball before it even hit the ground. The ball went right past the Eagle goalkeeper, who was leaning left. By the time Ashlynn Harris dove back to her right to save it, the ball was in the back of the net and Radford took a 1-0 lead.

The Grimsby, Ontario, Canada native was bound to find the back of the net sooner rather than later. She led all players with six shots, including three on goal and one score. Alexeis Kirnos, who played 74 minutes, was second on the team with five shots.

Three of Kirnos' five shots came in the first half, where the Highlanders totaled 10 but couldn't find the back of the net. Winthrop took six in the half but finished with 10 and five on frame. One of the Winthrop shots was very close to getting past Courtenay Kaplan but she made a leaping save in the 15th minute to push the ball over the net and keep the match scoreless. The senior tallied four saves in the first half and ended with five.

Radford fired 11 more shots in the second half until Paupst's goal became the difference maker. The defense of the Highlanders played solidly all night – especially in the second half. Winthrop was held to 10 total shots but only four came in the second half and only one was on goal.

STAT OF THE MATCH
Radford took a season-high 21 shots, eclipsing the 20 taken in Lexington, Va., against VMI. The Highlanders had nine different players take a shot in the match, led by Paupst and Kirnos. Nicole Ray and Oliver combined for five, while five different Highlanders had one each.

TWEET OF THE MATCH

QUOTABLE
"I think it was a good match," Ben Sohrabi said. "Both teams played very hard and wanted to come out and begin 1-0 in conference play. It was back-and-forth and they had some good chances but I thought we played very well tonight. The first one is always the hardest, so it's good to get this first win."

UP NEXT
Radford will take a week off before taking on Presbyterian on Saturday at 7 p.m. Next Saturday will be Alumni Day, featuring all kinds of various festivities.
