CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Both Highlander teams placed 15th at the Panorama Farms Invite hosted by Virginia Friday morning, highlighted by freshman Caitlin Apps' stellar 6K time clocked in at 21:16.9.
The Invite was a big matchup for the Highlanders as the course included tough rolling hills and the temperature heated up for the women's race. It also included many regionally and nationally ranked teams in both the men's and women's races.
After leading the Highlanders in the first race of the year, Apps added a big note to her freshman resume with a school-record 6K time and a 16th place finish against big competition. This also marked her second consecutive top-20 finish. The Dawlish, UK native is off to a hot start and has set two tough PR's to beat in the 4K and 6K races, while also dropping six seconds off her average mile going from 5:48 last week to 5:42 this week.
"The women were fantastic today," Sam Bradley, said. "We held out two of our top eight ladies and the six who ran stepped up to cover those gaps. Our young pack competed well against some of the toughest teams in the nation."
A duo of freshmen for the women's team set PR's for the 6K, as Maddie Yancey set her 6K PR with a 24:24.1 time and Savannah Hoff improved her 6K PR time by five seconds compared to last week bringing her new PR to 24:49.9. Chloe Phillips, Kayland Bond and Annsley Eckert each kept up the early season pace in a competitive field.
On the men's side four racers set personal records, as Joe Limo rebounded from the Virginia Tech Invitational by leading the Highlanders breaking his 8K PR by three seconds with a time of 26:17.3. Limo was the first Highlander to cross the finish line.
Bradley also commented, "The men kicked us off with some big performances from freshman Zach Worthman and sophomore Joe Limo. The guys ran tough against some national level competition and took another significant step forward."
Worthman wasn't far behind Limo setting his 8K PR with a time of 26:19.4, while Bus Baker also set his 8K PR shaving 40 seconds off from last weeks' time with a new record of 27:24.2. Peyton Hurd rounded out the pack of four record breakers with a three-second improved time of 27:55.6.
"Overall, this was a great day for us and will provide huge confidence moving forward to Charlotte and onwards to conference in November," Bradley added.
The Highlanders will get next weekend off from competition before returning to action two weeks from now at the Royals Challenge in Charlotte, N.C., on October 11th.
