MEN’S BASKETBALL OPENS FEBRUARY HOSTING CHARLESTON SOUTHERN

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford men's basketball team enters the final month of the 2019-20 regular season hosting Charleston Southern inside the Dedmon Center on Saturday at 4 p.m.

Radford (12-9, 7-2 Big South) handled Longwood with what seemed to be a seamless effort on Thursday night. After an 11-0 run midway through the first half, the Highlanders maintained control throughout the rest of the night. Travis Fields, Jr., tallied a season-high 21 points and Devonnte Holland chipped in a season-high 12.

Fields Jr., has been playing at the highest level as of late. He's averaging 15.0 points in his last five games and is practically averaging the same against conference opponents (14.9). The Portsmouth, Va., native has not scored less than 10 points in a game since Dec. 18 at Mississippi State.

Holland was efficient from the field converting 5-of-8 attempts for 12 points against the Lancers. He led the team with seven rebounds in 27 minutes of action. The Martinsville, Va., product has started every game for Radford since Nov. 19th.

Carlik Jones had a quiet Thursday night in the first half but ended with 16 points. The team's leading scorer ranks 11th on the all-time points list in program history. He's 13 points away from claiming sole possession of 10th place. The Cincinnati, Ohio has 1,320 career points and is averaging 19.5 points per game, which ranks inside the nation's top 40.

The defense has played great in league games and allowed 55 points – a conference game low – against the Lancers. Radford continues to rank first in Big South games in scoring defense with 65.2 points allowed, in addition to leading the circuit in field goal defense at 39.5 percent permitted. The Highlanders are the only team holding league foes under 40 percent shooting.

Saturday ends a three-game streak for Charleston Southern (10-11, 5-4 Big South) that featured the preseason top-3 teams in Gardner-Webb, Winthrop and Radford. Winthrop used a second half run to overcome a Charleston Southern lead on their way to a 77-60 win on Thursday night in Big South action.

Phlandrous Fleming Jr. secured his eighth double-double of the season and scored 20-plus for the 10th time in 11 contests finishing the night with 20 points and 13 rebounds. The loss ends a CSU four-game win streak that saw three come on the road.

Fleming Jr. has scored 20-plus points in 10 of the last 11 games and earned back-to-back Big South Player of the Week accolades. Fleming posted 31-point efforts in back-to-back road wins at High Point and Gardner-Webb helping the Bucs extend their three-game road win streak. He leads the team in scoring (16.8), rebounds (8.4) and assists (3.2). Dontrell Shuler led the team in scoring (17.9), but recently entered the transfer portal after missing the previous five games.

The Buccaneers rank third in conference games with 75.7 points per contest, while leading the league with 9.6 3-pointers per outing. Travis Anderson is averaging 8.8 points per contest, which is good for second in the Big South among players who have primarily come off the bench.

Radford holds a 48-29 lead over Charleston Southern. The teams split the regular-season series in 2018-19, with the home team winning each time. The Highlanders ultimately won the season series after beating the Bucs in the Big South Semifinals. This is the lone meeting between the two schools this season.

Saturday's game can be seen on ESPN+ or heard live online through Stretch Internet or radio outlets, WRAD 101.7 FM and WVRU 89.9 FM.

All season ticket holders will receive a Radford-branded stone coaster set for attending the game on Saturday.
