HIGHLANDERS LOOKING TO BOUNCE BACK AGAINST PIRATES

HAMPTON, Va.—The Highlanders will travel to play the second game of this two-game Big South Conference road trip, against the Pirates on Thursday, Jan. 9th at 7:00 p.m.

Radford will be looking to bounce back in this contest after falling in game one of this trip at High Point. The Panthers broke the streaking Highlanders' two-game roll on Monday night. A slow start for Radford, put them in a 24-point hole heading into halftime. After intermission, the Highlanders mounted a 38-point second half rally to get the deficit to six points in the waning moments of the fourth. Thanks to big time plays down the stretch from Makaila Wilson and Jen Falconer, the would-be comeback positioned Radford the closest it had been to High Point all night. The Panthers pulled away from the Highlanders with six trips to the charity stripe, and were able to convert four times.

The first half was slow for this streaking Radford team, putting up 10 points in both periods prior to the break. High Point doubled that output in the first, and added four more to it in the following period.

Wilson concluded the contest with 13 points, with Tina Lindenfeld adding nine more to the Radford cause.

Camryn Brown and Jenson Edwards both led the way for High Point with 14 points each. Brown neared a triple double with nine assists and eight rebounds.

The scrappy Falconer returned to her usual rebounding self and notched seven boards to go along with her six assists, six points, and steal. Through her 34 minutes played, she had an +5-efficiency rating.

Back on Mar. 6th, was the last time these teams met during the 2018-19 season. Radford won 84-59 to split the season series, at 1-1. The victory avenged the lone Big South defeat on the season and established a then new program mark for conference wins.

The Highlanders shot 50.8 percent from the floor, 44.4 from the three-point line, and 61.5 percent from the free throw line. Several had double-doubles in Sydney Nunley (12pts, 18reb), Lydia Rivers (16pts, 13reb), and Savannah Felgemacher (10pts, 11reb). Radford in total had five score in double-digits from Khiana Johnson with 10 points and Destinee Walker at 21 points, leading all scorers.

The Pirates struggled in Dedmon, shooting 29 percent from the floor. But, Hampton was led by two returners in Laren VanArsdale (13pts) and Ashley Bates (18pts), in addition to now graduated Mahaley Holit with 19 points.

A Radford win would give the Highlanders a bounce back win after falling to High Point on Monday and bring Radford to five wins in the all-time series. A loss would increase Hampton's winning streak to four games, all conference tilts, and give the Pirates a 12-4 advantage in the all-time series.

In NCAA Division I women's basketball, Radford as a team cracks the top-100 teams in fewest fouls at 33rd, 67th in fewest turnovers, and personal fouls per game at 100th. Khiana is 146th in assists/5th in conference and in assists per game 100th/4th in conference. Sydney Nunley is 219th/6th in conference for blocked shots per game. Amele Ngwafang is 175th/2nd in conference for rebounds per game. Ngwafang was honored by College Sports Madness on Jan. 6th as the Madness Mid-Major Player of the Week for the Big South Conference for her performances versus Presbyterian and Charleston Southern.

Jen Falconer is six games away from tying Jayda Worthy (2014-18) for career games played at 123. Falconer & Johnson continue to climb the career assists ladder, Falconer is eighth at 284 and Johnson is ninth at 283. Sydney Nunley has now solidified herself at No.7 in individual career blocks at 105.

Hampton started off the season with a pair of impressive nonconference wins over Alabama (64-61) and UTC (84-55) before hitting a four-game losing skid. An eight-point win over Mount St. Mary's (Md.) was followed by a 37-point loss at Old Dominion. The Pirates closed their nonconference schedule with a victory over Richmond (69-65).

Hampton opened Big South Conference play at Winthrop and bounced back from the loss to win their next three games against UNC Asheville (68-59), Gardner-Webb (63-58), and Presbyterian.

Against the Blue Hose, Freshman Nylah Young matched her three-day old career-highs with 21 points and 11 rebounds, while sophomore Laren VanArsdale had 20 points and four steals as Hampton cruised to a 71-42 win.
