Radford Athletics Posts Strong Graduation Success Rate

RADFORD, Va. – Radford Athletics continues to push academic success with the latest release of the NCAA Student-Athlete Graduation Success Rate. On Tuesday, the NCAA officially announced the Graduation Success Rate (GSR) and Radford University's Graduation Success Rate was an impressive 94 percent, up two percent from last year's report.

The Graduation Success Rate is a method the NCAA developed to measure academic success of a program's student-athletes. The GSR formula, intended to be a more complete and accurate look at student-athlete success, removes from the rate student-athletes who leave school while academically eligible and includes student-athletes who transfer to a school after initial enrollment elsewhere. Radford University has always strived for success in the classroom and this is just another reminder of the amazing student-athletes Radford athletics has.

"Our student-athletes deserve all the credit for their academic performance," Associate AD for Student-Athlete Services Alix Guynn said. "Their approach in the classroom is no different than in practice or on game day, they truly prepare to win in all areas. I also give a lot of credit to our coaches; they prioritize and constantly reiterate the importance academics."

The data shows that 8 of Radford's 15 programs covered during this period earned a Graduation Success Rate of 100 percent: men's tennis, men's soccer, women's basketball, women's golf, women's soccer, softball, women's tennis and volleyball. In addition, women's track and field/cross country (95), baseball (92), men's golf (88), and men's basketball (86) achieved a GSR of 80 percent or higher.

"The commitment of Division I college athletes to the classroom is incredible, and we celebrate their academic success," NCAA President Mark Emmert said. "To see 90% of student-athletes accomplish the ultimate goal of college graduation is a testament to their hard work and dedication. We must also support initiatives that help the remaining 10% of student-athletes earn their degrees. The NCAA applauds the achievements of student-athletes and will continue to support their goals in the classroom, in competition and in life."

This year's rate surpasses by 10 points the 80% goal set by former NCAA President Myles Brand in 2006.
