Men’s Hoops Moves to Music City for Saturday Night Showdown

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford men's basketball team will travel to the Music City to face Vanderbilt on Saturday at 8 p.m., inside historic Memorial Gymnasium.

Radford has played solid defense in its last three outings, which has led to three victories. Two of the three wins came over in-state conference foe, Longwood. The Highlanders withstood a solid second half effort to overcome the Lancers, 67-66, in the first meeting on Monday night and erased a 14-point deficit to top Longwood, 62-53, in the second on Tuesday.

As a team, the Highlanders are only allowing 61.9 points per game, which ranks 44th in the NCAA and first in the Big South. Radford also leads the league in total rebounds (262) and ranks 55th in the NCAA. The Highlanders have made a league-leading 103 free throws and sit 46th in all of college basketball.

Chyree Walker has three double-digit rebounding games and sits atop the team averaging 7.4 boards per outing. Quinton Morton-Robertson is shooting a team-best 81.3 percent from the charity stripe. He's second on the team with 9.3 points per game, while Fah'Mir Ali is first with 11.1 points per game. Dravon Mangum has been heating up from long range and has hit five of his last 11 3-pointers through the last two games.

Vanderbilt's season-opening date of Nov. 27 was the latest beginning to a season in 31 years. After a victory over Valparaiso, Vanderbilt then had a 16-day wait until its second game of the season after four straight cancellations due to a positive COVID-19 result within the program.

Following the long breaks, Vanderbilt is now in the midst of a stretch with four games in 10 days between Dec. 13-22. Vandy suffered its first loss of the season on Wednesday against another Commonwealth opponent in Richmond. The Commodores erased a six-point lead in the late minutes of the game but ultimately fell in overtime.

Scotty Pippen Jr., leads the team with 20.3 points per game with Dylan Disu second on the team with 11.0. Pippen Jr., is shooting 100 percent from the charity stripe (24-for-24) and ranks second in the league with 20.3 points per game.

In the only all-time meeting between the two schools, Vanderbilt defeated the Highlanders 74-62 at Memorial Gym on Nov. 28, 2017. The game can be seen on SEC Network+ or heard on WRAD 101.7 FM or WVRU 89.9 FM.
