Highlanders Travel to Thundering Herd for Sunday Tilt

RADFORD, Va. – Radford (0-1) will resume their 2020-21 non-conference schedule against Marshall (0-0) on Sunday, December 9 at 1 p.m. in Huntington, West Virginia. This contest will not be live streamed but you can follow along with live stats or listen live on WRAD 1460 AM | 103.5 FM.

LAST TIME OUT
Previously, on November 9, 2012 to commence the 2012-13 season these teams faced off inside the Cam Henderson Center. The Thundering Herd bested the Highlanders in a very close contest, 65-63. Da'Naria Erwin Spencer netted 14 points and became the third player in Radford women's basketball history to be listed in the top-10 for points, assists, and steals. Radford had several chances to tie or even win the game down the stretch, but the Thundering Herd's defense withstood the challenge to hold on for the victory.

These two teams have met a total of 27 times, beginning in the 1972-73 season. Marshall leads the all-time series 15-12.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENT
Marshall's scheduled season opener against Morgan State was slated for Tuesday, Dec. 1 but was canceled. This will officially be the Thundering Herd's first game of the 2020-21 season after a fairly successful 2019-20 season. Marshall battled through an overall 13-17 record and Conference USA 7-11 record to advance to the 2020 Air Force Reserve C-USA Women's Basketball Championship.

Kristen Mayo set a new career-high with 22 points as the eighth-seeded Marshall women's basketball team forced 26 turnovers in a 71-67 win over ninth-seeded Southern Miss in first-round action at The Star in 2020's Conference USA Tournament. The win propelled the Thundering Herd into the quarterfinal round against top-seeded Rice.

Head coach Tony Kemper enters his fourth season at the helm and has a primarily young squad with five upperclassmen. Sophomore Savannah Wheeler was named to the preseason All-Conference USA Team back in November.

PREVIOUS GAME HIGHLIGHTS
The Highlanders opened the season 10 days ago in Carmichael Arena versus the [RV] Tar Heels. Riding career days from Rachel LaLonde and Ariel Williams, Radford cut the deficit in the third period to the smallest margin of the contest at 10 points but fell to North Carolina 61-90. Tina Lindenfeld paced the team offensively with 13 points.

All eight student-athletes available for head coach Mike McGuire scored in the game in addition to the freshman trio scoring at least three points. Williams and LaLonde tallied career highs in almost every offensive category, ending the game with a combined 21 points, 13 rebounds, and seven assists in their first collegiate starts as Highlanders. Taiye Johnson joined the pair in the occasion as the starting center for Radford. McGuire implemented a rotation that saw Tudor as the first off the bench for Radford. The freshman trio played integral minutes and each scored their first collegiate points in the game. Tudor paced the core with 27 minutes, five rebounds, and 11 points.

North Carolina's midrange game and ability to get to the free throw line eventually propelled them ahead of Radford in the fourth period. The Tar Heels ended the contest with six in double figures, led by 19 points from Deja Kelly.
