BLACKSBURG, Va.—In their fourth matchup in program history, the Radford women's lacrosse team fell to NRV foe No.22 Virginia Tech, in a 19-2 decision on Wednesday evening inside the Beamer-Lawson Indoor Facility.
Virginia Tech was held scoreless by Radford's impressive defense in the opening seven minutes. The Highlander defense, headed by goalkeeper Maddie Bowman, faced numerous shots as well as a free position take but were able to rally and keep the Hokies at bay.
Junior, Jennifer Shield opened up the scoring for Radford in the first period with four minutes left on the clock. Her man-up goal was assisted by Katie Carroll to put the Highlanders on the board heading into the half. That was Shield's third goal of the 2020 season.
In the second period the senior Amanda Paino, sent her offering sailing into the back of the net with about two minutes remaining. The goal was the fourth for her in the early goings of this campaign, and came on a draw control initiated by Bella Signorello.
In the cage for Radford was Bowman, who notched all 60 minutes and 14 saves on the evening. The sophomore concluded the contest with a save percentage of 42.4 percent while setting a new career high in saves.
Offensively, the Highlanders did not back down and sent shots toward the net repeatedly. Paino, Shield, and Carroll led the team in shots on goal. The trifecta were joined in their attempts by Signorello who sent up a shot of her own in the match.
On the defensive end, Paino paced the efforts for Radford causing a pair of Virginia Tech turnovers. Kaite Bendrick, Maggie Egan, and Megan Hawken each disrupted the Hokie offense generating three additional turnovers.
Virginia Tech was led by Sarah Lubnow who tallied a game-high five goals. Other scorers for the Hokies were Jacelyn Lazore, Kayla Frank, Julia Bolte, and Paige Petty. Angie Benson notched nine saves for the home team en route to an 81.8 save percentage.
