RADFORD WINS FIFTH STRAIGHT IN HIGH-SCORING AFFAIR

RADFORD, Va. – Seven Radford runs in the first three innings set the tone on Tuesday afternoon at Carter Memorial Stadium, as the Highlanders defeated George Mason in an offensive battle, 14-9.

The win was the fifth straight for the Highlanders (9-7), while George Mason (1-13) suffered its second consecutive defeat.

Radford took an early lead in the first inning when J.D. Mundy hit a two-run double down the left-field line. Reigning Big South Player of the Week Colby Higgerson added an RBI single in the inning to put the Highlanders ahead, 3-0.

George Mason used a pair of homers to tie the score, but another big inning at the plate, this time in the third, put the Highlanders ahead for good. Austin Kaplan and Sean Cheely each had RBI singles and Garrett Matheny hit a two-run triple to right center to put Radford ahead, 7-3.

The visiting Patriots cut into the lead with a three-run homer in the sixth inning but Radford responded with its third big inning of the game in the bottom half. The Highlanders put up a five spot in the inning, highlighted by another Mundy RBI double and a two-run triple off the bat of Kaplan.

George Mason kept the game interesting with a pair of late-inning homers, but David Bryant scored on a wild pitch in the seventh and Carlin Christian hit a solo homer in the eighth – his first hit of the year.

Bruce Hudson inherited the bases loaded in the eighth, stranded all three runners and threw a 1-2-3 ninth for his fourth save of the season. Derek Domecq was credited with the win for the second straight game, while George Mason starter Nate Young was tagged with the loss.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Christian's homer was his first since the 2018 season. The Highlanders hit three triples in the game (Matheny, Will Harless, Kaplan) and now have seven three-baggers during this opening homestand. Brandon Feathers got the start for the first time this season, going 4 1/3 innings with three strikeouts.
