Radford Collects Huge Road Points in Win Over High Point

HIGH POINT, N.C. – The Radford women's soccer team went into enemy territory Wednesday night and collected their strongest conference victory of the season so far against High Point, 1-0.

The Panthers possessed the ball for a majority of the first half but looking deeper into the stat sheet proved how the Highlanders kept control. High Point got seven shots off but only one of those shots would come on goal. It was also the only shot the Panthers got off inside the box the entire night.

As the first half wore on the Highlanders found their footing on the offensive side of the ball. Radford would get two shots on goal before the half ended but the team was unable to find the net.

Just two minutes into the first half, Radford would find the only goal it needed that night. Amy Swain netted her second goal in as many games with a perfectly placed shot to the top-left corner of the net. Katie Oliver provided the pass into the box for Swain and picked up her sixth assist of the season, tripling her previous career high.

The Highlander faithful would hold their breath for the remaining 43 minutes of the match. The defensive back line of Kayla Thomas, Kennedy Dunnings and Saleena Lynch kept the stress levels down as they kept the fast-paced High Point offense out of the box and off the scoring sheet.

The road win sealed up three crucial points for the Highlanders as the regular season has just three games remaining. The win vaulted Radford up two spots in the conference standings to sixth overall, just inside a potential playoff berth.

KEY STATS
  • Radford finished the night with four shots on goal to High Point's one. 50% of the Highlanders' shots came on goal while the Panthers only saw 10% of their shots come on goal.
  • Swain scored her second goal in as many games tonight and moved her season total to five which is third-most on the team. Her three game-winners also rank second-most on the team.
  • The second half offense fueled the Highlander victory once again tonight. Radford now has 28 second half goals on the season which ranks tied for sixth-most in program history. No program has broken the top five since 1993.
  • In the last three games the Radford defense has done everything possible to keep the opponent scoreless. Over the last three games combined, Radford's opponents have only found two shots on goal.
  • Radford and High Point have historically played very closely, and tonight's victory moved the series history back into a tie at 14-14-3. Tonight's victory was Radford's first at High Point since 2013. It was also the Highlanders' first time ever shutting out High Point on the road.
QUOTABLE
"That was a great win on the road against a very good High Point team. I loved the passion we defended with tonight and thought we were very smart in the attack creating some quality chances at times. We are defending well and getting shutouts and that needs to continue." -Head Coach Ben Sohrabi.
