Radford Knocks Off Winthrop with Two Late Goals

RADFORD, VA. – The Radford women's soccer team took down one of the top teams in the Big South Saturday night in a 2-0 winning effort over Winthrop.

After a scoreless first half that was primarily controlled by the Highlanders, that same theme persisted into the second half. Radford's offense outpaced Winthrop all night producing multiple good looks on goal.

The game remained tied up to 80 minutes into the game until Winthrop committed a crucial mistake with a handball inside the box. Brianna Oliver lined up to take the penalty kick and nailed it into the back left corner of the net to give Radford the 1-0 lead.

Winthrop attempted to mount a comeback in the final ten minutes, but Radford would have none of that. With their defenders out of position, Amy Swain broke free and ran coast to coast with the ball and scored Radford's second goal of the night. Radford would hold on for the last five minutes of the game posting their second straight clean sheet.

KEY STATS
  • Radford continues to out-shoot its opponents finishing tonight's game with 17 more shots than Winthrop.
  • B. Oliver's goal was her sixth of the season and boosted her point total to 16 which is second-most on the team.
  • Radford's second half offense continues to cause issues for opponents. Tonight's two second-half goals increased their season total to 27 which already rank seventh-most in program history. No Radford team has broken into the top-ten of this category since 2002.
  • The starting defensive line of Saleena Lynch, Kayla Thomas and Kennedy Dunnings helped goalkeeper Lauren Seedlock post her second straight shutout. Winthrop only saw one shot fall on goal tonight.
  • Radford now owns a 13-5-3 edge in the series history against Winthrop.

QUOTABLE
"We're very happy to get two wins in a row. I thought we did a good job at defending our home field this week scoring a total of eight goals and only one against. A lot of credit to our back line for two shutouts this week but as a group we defended really well and created a lot of chances. We still have things to improve on but definitely happy with the two results this week." -Head Coach Ben Sohrabi.

UP NEXT
Another crucial week of competition awaits the Highlanders as they will travel to another top-of-the-Big-South squad in High Point next Wednesday before returning home to host Presbyterian on Saturday.
