Chapman’s Electric Debut Powers Way to Highlanders’ First Win

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford Women's Basketball program notched their first victory of the 2021-22 season Friday night 75-44 over Lenoir-Rhyne. The freshman Alyssa Chapman had a debut to remember for Radford finishing the night with 14 points, three blocks and six rebounds.

After Lenoir-Rhyne made their first two baskets of the game to take a 4-0 lead, Radford responded with an 8-0 run to take the lead and never looked back as they held onto that lead for the rest of the game. Bryonna McClean provided offensive firepower early on with a fast break layup to tie the game at four. McClean would finish the first quarter with four points and four rebounds which led all players at the time.

With a 12-9 lead headed into the second quarter, Radford cleaned up the turnovers of which they committed 11 in the first 15 minutes of the game and only committed eight the rest of the way. Destinee Marshall netted five points in the second quarter thanks to a layup that started the quarter and a three-pointer later on. Chapman also made her first appearance of the night and immediately contributed with a made three pointer and three rebounds.

Radford would double up Lenoir-Rhyne with a halftime score of 30-15. Ashley Tudor also continued her hot shooting with a three-pointer and two made free throws in the half as she continues to be a major part of Radford's offense. The Radford defense held strong despite an aggressive attack by the Bears in the first half, not allowing their opponent to score double digits in either of the first two quarters.

The game continued to flow the way of the Highlanders in the second half and Chapman truly came alive in the back half of the game scoring 11 of her 14 points in the final 20 minutes. The Highlanders' bench also outscored the Bears 22-5 in the second half as Vanessa Blake made her way onto the score sheet for the first time this season while also pulling down three rebounds.

While Kyanna Morgan was held relatively quiet in the first half, she broke out in the second half in large part due to her four steals which led the team. Marshall, McClean, Tudor and Chapman would all finish with double-digit point totals on the night. McClean flirted with a double-double coming up just short with eight rebounds. Radford also recorded a season-high 17 assists on the night with four Highlanders recording three or more assists.

QUOTABLE
"I'm really proud of Alyssa, she's had a long road since working during summer school and overcoming injuries. For her to step up and contribute tonight when we really needed a lift was great to see. Turnovers continue to be an issue for us that we need to address. It's encouraging to see our team score, but we need to limit our turnovers. Trying to set the pace and finding the aggression we want to play with is what we're looking for. We have to figure out how to put that together for a full 40 minutes, but I liked how we put it together tonight as the game went along." -Head Coach Mike McGuire
