No. 2 Radford Set for Quarterfinal Matchup with No. 7 Hampton

RADFORD, Va. – March is here and the 2021 Hercules Tires Big South Men's Basketball Championship will begin on Monday night for the Radford men's basketball when Hampton travels across the Commonwealth for a quarterfinal matchup at 6 p.m.

No. 2 Radford (14-11, 12-6 Big South) had a tune-up game in its last outing with a 74-51 win over Mount Aloysius on Wednesday night. The Highlanders then patiently waited to find out their next opponent and it became official on Saturday night around 4 p.m., as No. 7 Hampton downed No. 10 Presbyterian.

The Pirates' (11-13, 9-9 Big South) Raymond Bethea, Jr. drained a 3-pointer with 2.9 seconds left as Hampton defeated the Blue Hose, 67-65, in the opening round of postseason play. The Pirates hit a season-high 55.0 percent from the field and took as much as a 17-point advantage in the first half.

As a team, Radford is averaging 68.0 points per game and holding teams to 64.6 – a league-best. The Highlanders are shooting 45.8 percent from the floor and leads the Big South in field goal percentage defense holding teams to just 41.5 percent.

The Highlanders have an 8.1 rebounding margin against opponents and lead the league in rebounding with 37.5. Chyree Walker leads the Big South with 7.8 boards per game. He and Lewis Djonkam are second and first, respectively, in the Big South offensive rebounds at 2.3 and 2.2.

Fah'Mir Ali was named to the All-Freshman Team when the Big South Conference awards were announced on Friday. He leads the team with 10.3 points per game and 3.8 assister per outing. The freshman has also notched a pair of 20-point contests. The Pirates had a player on First Team All-Big South in Davion Warren, while Russell Dean was voted to the Honorable Mention Team.

Warren led the league in scoring (21.3 ppg) and in steals (1.9 spg) at the end of the regular season. His scoring average ranked him eighth nationally after a regular season that saw him have six games of 25 or more points and two games of 30 or more. Dean was second in the league in assists averaging six per game, while chipping in just under 11 points per game.

Radford won both meetings between the two teams earlier this season. The Highlanders won both games by a combined 12-point margin back in early January.

The Highlanders had four players average in double-figures against the Pirates this season with Djonkam and Ali each averaging 13.5 points. Radford shot 49.1 percent from the floor and 39.5 percent from long-range averaging 8.5 per game.

Radford has an 8-5 edge in the all-time series with Hampton but will be looking for redemption in postseason play after the Pirates ended Radford's championship run in the semifinals a season ago.

Monday's game can be seen on ESPN3 and can be heard on WRAD 101.7 FM or WVRU 89.9 FM.
