Eagles Pull Away Late in Overtime Against Highlanders

ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Radford (5-8, 5-6 BSC) women's basketball team concluded their road stint versus Winthrop (6-11, 5-9 BSC) splitting the season series at one win apiece, falling in overtime to the Eagles in a 59-63 decision on Saturday night.

The contest began slow for both teams, going scoreless until the 7:44 mark with Winthrop getting on the board first. Ashley Tudor returned the favor at 5:14 to get the Highlanders on the board, trailing 4-2. Tudor's crucial fastbreak layup gave Radford the lead and momentum heading down the stretch. The Highlanders tacked on several more points but would end the period down 13-12 to the Eagles.

In the following stanza, Radford notched 20 points as seven different players notched baskets for the Highlanders. On the defensive end, Winthrop was held to only 13 points and entered the intermission trailing Radford 32-26.

A second half shooting drought plagued Radford as they concluded the fourth, shooting 29.6 percent from the floor, 22.2 percent from three, and 66.7 percent from the charity stripe. The Highlanders' 24 points came up just shy of the Eagles' 30. The final period of regulation saw four ties, with the final coming on a spit trip to the free throw line for Winthrop which halted the game at 56 all, propelling the contest into Radford's first overtime game of the season.

The teams combined for a total of 10 points in the additional period, with several of those belonging to the Highlanders and the remaining seven to the Eagles. The teams traded baskets to commence the period followed by a string of split trips to the free throw line. With seven seconds remaining, Madison Ervin sealed the victory for Winthrop with a pair of free throws to make the lead 63-59. A last-ditch effort from Williams from beyond the arc would not fall, breaking Radford's three-game win streak.

Bryonna McClean, Williams, and Makaila Wilson combined for 27 points to lead the way for Radford. Winthrop had four with 10 or more points, paced by Anika Riley's double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds.
