Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Early Goal Leads Women’s Soccer to Victory over UNC Asheville

RADFORD, Va. – A goal in the sixth minute led the Radford women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over UNC Asheville on Wednesday afternoon at the Greenwood Soccer Field.

Radford (3-1, 2-1 Big South) scored early thanks to Maevyn Jones. Jones was chasing down the ball that the defender had goo pursuit on. However, the defender misplayed the ball and Jones got better position to one-time the ball past the goalkeeper in the bottom left part of the net.

It was the Highlanders' fourth shot of the game and Jones' third at the time. At the end of the first half Radford had nine shots compared to UNC Asheville's two. In the second half, UNC Asheville led in shots, 4-3, but only one was on target and it was saved by Lexi Dean.

Jones had half of Radford's 12 shots and five of them came in the first half. Lily McLane and Gabi Paupst had the other multi-shot game with two each. They also each landed one on frame.

Defenders Kennedy Dunnings, Kayla Thomas, Selena Lynch and Amy Swain each touted 90-minute games.

Quotable
"Our attack is doing enough to win and I think our defense has been great the last two matches," Ben Sohrabi said. "It's tough to get a road win during 'covid season'. It takes a lot of focus to pull off a day trip and get the win so I'm very happy and proud of the team to get it done. Another road trip Sunday and we'll be at home for a while."

Up Next
Radford will end its two-game road swing at Gardner-Webb on Sunday night at 7 p.m., before returning home for four straight matches.
