Radford Downs VMI Thanks to Early Inning Offense

LEXINGTON, Va. – The Radford baseball team pounded 16 hits and scored eight of their 12 runs in the first four innings en route to a 12-3 victory over VMI on Tuesday night at Gray-Minor Stadium.

Sean Cheely provided early offense as he took a 2-1 pitch over the right field wall to lead off the game. David Bryant and Jalen Buster both added to it with a pair of runs in the second inning to push the lead to 3-0. Bryant roped an RBI double to right field and later came around to score on Buster's single.

Radford matched the inning with the amount of runs for three straight innings as the lead was extended to 6-0 after the third inning. Will Harless provided the three-run third inning with a first pitch bomb to left center field.

Meanwhile, in his second start of the season Hunter Williams was cruising. He only allowed one hit but only faced nine batters with 33 pitches thrown.

The Highlanders couldn't match the fourth inning with four runs but did score two thanks to Garrett Matheny and Anthony Galati, who each tallied RBI singles.

Vinnie Venturi entered in relief of Williams and struck out three trough two innings. He allowed VMI's first run of the game. Landon Higgerson allowed their second and third runs in the sixth. Bruce Hudson, Derek Domecq and Brock Smith closed the door holding the Keydets scoreless in the final 3.2 innings.

The Highlanders put up four insurance runs in the eighth and ninth inning to take a 12-3 lead. Harless earned his third hit and fourth RBI of the game in those two innings and Tanner Barrs had a pinch-hit two run single in the ninth.

Straton Podaras also had a three-hit day going 3-for-5 with three runs scored, while Connor Bagnieski and Galati each drew three walks. Galati and Bryant each tallied multi-hit games as well.
