Radford Takes Advantage of Longwood Pitching in 11-3 Victory

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford baseball team tallied 11 runs on 11 hits and took advantage of 11 walks in an 11-3 victory over Longwood on Tuesday night at Carter Memorial Stadium.

The first 11 runs of the combined 14 were scored in the first inning. The Highlanders struck first thanks to a pair of runs scoring on one wild pitch. The Lancer catcher was unable to find the ball and with speed on the base paths it was an easy pair of runs for Garrett Matheny and Sean Cheely.

Longwood answered and took a 3-2 lead by scoring three unearned runs in the second. From that point on Radford scored nine unanswered runs. Four of the runs came in the bottom of the second. The first came when Matheny plated Tanner Barrs on a triple to right center field. He later scored on a wild pitch. Two more Highlander runs scored on an error and gave Radford a 6-3 edge.

The Lancer starting pitcher, Dillon Champagne, only made it an inning and had a team-high four of the Lancers 11 walks. Aidan Vanvickle took over and allowed four runs – two earned with just two walks. Longwood also tallied eight wild pitches as a staff.

Radford added a run in the third but didn't score again until the sixth with a run on the sac fly and another on a wild pitch. Not that any were needed but Radford notched a couple more runs thanks to a two-run double by Anthony Galati.

On the mound, Hunter Williams tossed four innings and allowed three runs – all unearned. He tallied three strikeouts as well as Ty Burton who tossed three innings of scoreless baseball. Brock Smith entered in the eighth and got the final six outs with a team-high four punch outs.

Cheely led the way with a 3-for-5 night and two runs scored, while Connor Bagnieski tallied a team-best three runs scored. He also had a multi-hit game as well as Anthony Galati. Galati also accounted for two of the Highlanders five RBIs. He and Cheely each had doubles as well as Barrs. Matheny tallied the lone triple of the day.
