Baseball Splits with UNC Asheville in Series Opening Doubleheader

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The Radford baseball team split with UNC Asheville on Friday afternoon in a series opening doubleheader at Greenwood Field. The first game saw the Highlanders plate 11 runs in an 11-6 victory, while game two saw a comeback fall short in a 6-5 loss.

Game 1
Early offense carried the Highlanders to an 11-6 victory. Radford scored eight runs through the first three innings. Tanner Barrs plated six of the first eight runs. The first two came in the second inning when he hit a two-run double. The other four came in the third inning when he hit a grand slam.

UNC Asheville scored six runs to make it a two-run game. The Bulldogs scored three in the fourth and three more in the sixth.

The Highlanders added an insurance run the eighth inning on a double-steal and the final Radford runs came in the ninth inning when Sean Cheely plated Barrs and David Bryant.

Cheely and Barrs had two hits each and Cheely added two RBIs on top of Barrs career-high six.

Greg Duncan started the game and struck out five, Derek Domecq struck out four in 1.2 innings in relief and Bruce Hudson struck out six in 3.2 innings of no-hit baseball on his way to the win.

Game 2
The second game almost saw the Highlanders nearly pull of a comeback after being three runs down

Trailing 5-2 through seven innings, Radford was down to its final inning and drew a pair of walks to lead off the inning. Then Sean Cheely hit a one-out single to load the bases. After a pitching change, Straton Podaras hit a ball to right center field that cleared the bases and tied the game at five.

UNC Asheville had three outs to end the game in just nine innings but only needed one as a solo home run to left field with one out in the inning ended it.

The Bulldogs scored first and then Radford tied it up in the fouth inning thanks to an Anthony Galati sac fly. Each team scored a run to tie things at two midway through the sixth. UNC Asheville scored two in the sixth and added one more in the seventh.

Podaras had the only multi-hit performance going 2-for-5 with three RBIs. Radford drew nine walks in the game. Will Harless, Connor Bagnieski and Jalen Buster each had two.

Ryan Bywaters earned the start and tossed six innings of six hit baseball. He only allowed two walks, struck and six and allowed four runs. Ty Burton suffered the loss but struck out four.
