Highlanders Knock Off Unbeaten Runnin’ Bulldogs

RADFORD, Va. – Radford (6-5, 2-0 BSC) gave previously unbeaten Gardner-Webb (8-8, 3-1 BSC) its first loss of the season Friday afternoon in dominating fashion with a 6-1 final score.

Radford set the tone for the day by winning the doubles point through courts one and two. After a slow start, both doubles teams quickly adjusted and won decisively. Yevhen Sirous and Guilherme Severin finished first with a 6-3 win on court one while Demis Taramonlis and Andres Silva clinched on court two with a 6-3 win as well.

In singles play the Highlanders continued to dominate their opponent. Silva made quick work of his opponent on court five winning 6-2, 6-1 to give Radford the 2-0 lead. Next to finish was Sirous who played strong enough on court one that the result was never in doubt, winning in straight sets 6-0, 6-2. Aditya Balsekar was the clincher for Radford, also winning in straight sets on court six 6-2, 6-2.

With a 4-0 lead, Radford turned its attention looking to finish strong on the three remaining courts. Konstantinos Raptis battled back after dropping his first set on court four to win 4-6, 6-3, 10-4 and make it a 5-0 lead. Severin also won in straight sets on court three 7-6(3), 6-2 to make it an incredible 6-0 Radford lead. Taramonlis was forced into three sets on court two and Radford just missed a sweep due to the quick tie breaker that went Gardner-Webb's way 11-9.
