Radford Tops Campbell, Survives Late Rally

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford women's soccer team picked up a big win, topping Campbell, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon.

Radford (2-1, 1-1 Big South) was able to take advantage of an early defensive miscue from the Camels when Alexeis Kirnos was able to connect with Maevyn Jones for a goal in the sixth minute.

The Highlanders doubled their lead in the 27th minute when the ball bounced right to Reese Degnan with an open goal. She fired it to the bottom right part of the goal and found the back of the net.

Even though Radford led on the scoreboard at the half, the Camels led in shots (7-3) and corner kicks (8-2). The pressure the Camels put on Radford came through in the 66th minute when Laney Peabody scored a goal on a set piece corner kick. That cut the Highlander lead to one.

Campbell looked to tie it up with nine shots in the second half and six corner kicks. The team ended with 16 shots to Radford's five and 14 corner kicks to the Highlander's four. The Camels had possession for 61 percent of the game while Radford only had it for 39.

The Camels took two shots in the final minute and the final shot was nearly a costly one as Lexi Dean misplayed a ball and was slightly out of possession. As the defense scrambled, Dean was able to stop the final shot with 30 seconds left on the clock after getting back into position.

Quotable
"Today was a tough win vs a very good Campbell team." Ben Sohrabi said.
"I was proud of how we started the game with a nice goal early and capitalized on a great opportunity later. In the second half I loved our grit and competitiveness to finish it off."
