Williams Deals and Offense Explodes at Longwood

RADFORD, Va. – The Highlanders offense exploded for 16 runs Tuesday night to support the quality outing by Hunter Williams who held the Lancers to three runs over 5.1 innings.

The offense started early and created an insurmountable lead of 16 runs within the first five innings. Longwood had issues finding the strike zone early, as their pitching staff surrendered nine walks through the first half of the game. Radford took full advantage of that in the first inning scoring six off the Longwood starter to chase him early.

The Highlanders got their first two runs of the night off bases loaded walks from Straton Podaras and Connor Bagnieski. A wild pitch scored Bagnieski, and then Dac Archer got a start to his incredible night with a two-RBI single making it 5-0. Garrett Matheny's sacrifice fly made it 6-0 and David Bryant singled in two more runs to make it an 8-0 lead going into the bottom half of the first.

Going into the second inning the Highlanders did not let up. Archer and Matheny doubled adding more RBI's to their total on the night, and suddenly it was 11-0 before the Lancers could even record a baserunner.

The Highlanders finally were held scoreless in the third, but in the fourth they put up three more runs. Bryant took a hit by pitch to draw in another run, while Podaras drew a walk that forced a wild pitch and throwing error as two runs came across. The lead was 14-1, and Williams was in full control on the mound.

Williams would go 5.1 innings on the night, striking out six and keeping the Lancers well out of reach. The Highlanders would concede just two more runs after his exit, cemting the 16-5 final score on a night where multiple Big South squads put up double digit runs.

Matheny, Archer, and Jalen Buster all had three-hit nights for the Highlanders. The trio also recorded three doubles and drove in seven of the team's runs. Sean Cheely also had an impressive night, collecting a hit, RBI, and stolen base.
